SureStay Plus Hotel Gold Beach

I've stayed at dozens of Best Westerns across the country and have always liked them, but this Gold Beach one was shocking. The patio screen and door wouldn't lock, there were nail and screw holes just painted over, the toilet paper holder was coming loose, and the tub stopper didn't work, so no baths. My dark brown socks were black by the end of one night. The lamp switch was grimy, the wall crevices needed caulking everywhere, and the heater wouldn't turn down, so I shut it off. Breakfast was poor too: thin lunch-meat ham, tiny apples, and no cereal variety. I've never had a bad BW stay before, and won't stay at Best Western Gold Beach again. Their cloned response is below, huh, BS.

The price was ridiculous, $190 after they gave me only a 10% refund for all the problems I described and photographed. A senior hotel manager refused a proper refund, and never apologized for the filth, smell, discomfort, or inconvenience. Another hotel had refunded 50% for a dirty mattress cover, by comparison. I'm considering speaking with city hall health and sanitation about having this place condemned as unfit for people. I'm not making this up, as the photos show. I suspect the hotel's rating is based on fake reviews. The room reeked, probably because of the carpet, and the mattress pad smelled like a wet rat. Even after hours with the sliding doors open, the odor was strong enough that I slept with the balcony door open all night. The baseboard heater barely worked, so I needed a sleeping bag to stay warm. The bathroom sink's hot tap was almost impossible to turn without a wrench, and the old, broken shower tap sent the water suddenly from hot to cold. The tub was blackish. See photos. The rooms are shabby and smelly, and the service is poor. For a third of what this ripoff costs, you could stay at Motel Dumpster down the street. Before this place, I spent 6.5 weeks at a reasonably priced, older but clean and decent small-town Best Western in California. It was remarkably congenial and deserved the Plus, while this place should be called Worst Western Minus. Don't waste your money here.

I was in the area for work and had a good stay. The motel is close to lots of restaurants, and there's a nice trail at the back leading down to the beach. My room had a beach view and the usual basics, including a fridge, microwave, TV, and hair dryer.

Our room, #237, had a lovely view, and the bed and pillows were comfortable. The hotel is dated, as many reviews mention, but this room was very clean. The men who handled check-in on 4/3 and checkout were friendly. Breakfast had scrambled eggs, ham, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, waffles, and more. There’s a large pool and hot tub, though we didn't use them. I can't speak for the other rooms, but I'd book ours again.
