Gold Canyon Golf Resort & Spa

The property is beautiful, with lovely views, and our room was spacious, clean, and quiet. The area felt peaceful. The food was fine, but the stay as a whole felt amateurish and unfinished. Tamaya resort near Albuquerque is a useful comparison: a four star golf resort with a spa and upscale dining that meets or exceeds expectations. Service there is consistently excellent, housekeeping comes daily, toiletries feel spa-like, and room supplies get replenished. That seems like a basic expectation for a four star resort. We’re not difficult guests, but Gold Canyon fell short, and we’ll stay elsewhere when we return to the area. Housekeeping and in-room supplies were skimpy compared with other three or four star hotels. Coffee pods and toiletries were available if requested, but only in small amounts, so we had to ask repeatedly. Service also varied. The bellman was a little rude and snarky on arrival. We ordered dessert from room service on the second day and were told it would take about 20 minutes. An hour later, we called and learned they’d forgotten it. At breakfast on the third morning, the server brought water, told us to get food, and said she’d return for drink orders. Twenty minutes later she asked whether we planned to eat. I said yes, but wanted coffee first because the room had so little. She eventually brought it without cream, and we didn’t get a carafe for refills like the other tables. I got cream from someone else, but neither coffee nor water was ever refilled. There were some smaller irritations too: the mini-fridge was noisy, parking spaces were very tight, and the headboards weren’t secured properly, so they banged against the wall whenever we shifted position during the night.
