Holbrooke Hotel

Kim made our stay stand out. She was warm and helpful throughout, and went well beyond what we expected to make sure we had what we needed. The location also made the price feel worthwhile, with the main destinations right outside. Grass Valley and Nevada City have a friendly, relaxed feel that made for a nice break from big city hassles. Our room was clean, attractive, and comfortable enough to go barefoot in. The heat kept it cozy, though sound seemed to travel through the area by the door, so keep the 11 PM quiet hours in mind. The bathroom and tub had a cool vintage, possibly Victorian, look, and were easy to use. The water temperature control worked perfectly. Be cautious getting in and out of the slightly raised metal tub, especially for older guests. There are shops inside the hotel, and breakfast was good. The interior design also gave the place a vacation feel. Rooms book up fast, so reserve the room type you want early, since availability can affect which amenities you get. Kim helped us get what we needed. I've stayed at plenty of hotels around Northern California for work, and this was a real standout.

Kim at the front desk was welcoming and really kind, and the service was great. The hotel is clean and comfortable, with lots of attention to detail. Since it's an older building, there is some noise. My room was directly over the bar, so I could hear the music whenever it was open, though it wasn't too bad.

Room 10 had a balcony facing the back, and there was plenty of space, high ceilings, and thoughtful decor. The bed and bedding were great, and I was happy to find Aqua Panna water in the room. Housekeeping kept everything lovely, and the front desk service was good. Breakfast was the one weak spot for us. The coffee and mini scones didn't quite hit the mark, though there are so many good places to eat nearby that it wasn't a big deal. The Holbrooke is right on Main Street near Mill Street Mall. We stayed a few nights last month and were impressed. We'll come back.

The drinks are seriously good, and Joaquin, Kate and Christian are awesome bartenders. The food is hearty and a bit heavy-handed, which seems to suit most people here, though I'm more into farm-to-table food. It's an elegant, homey, lovely place, with some heads on the wall, of course. I'm sitting here now with the old doors open to the street, listening to people laugh and have a good time. The staff are amazing. Enjoy!
