La Quinta Inn & Suites Gun Barrel City

The room was filthy, with dirty walls, holes in the carpet, and a grimy, moldy balcony covered in spider nests. I had asked for a ground-floor room because I'm 74 and have a bad back, and my friend has bad knees, but we were put on the third floor. The next morning the elevator was out. I called at 5, and it was still broken. The hotel said repairs wouldn't start until 10. When I asked the desk clerk how I was supposed to get our luggage downstairs, she didn't seem concerned. She also refused when I asked for some money off the bill. We come to Canton often, but I'll never stay here again. I feel I should have gotten at least some of my money back. It's disgusting. Don't stay here.

The room was clean, and they let us bring our black Labrador for a reasonable extra deposit. The people at check-in were friendly, too. It's a family-run place and not the Hilton, but it cost about half as much. We'd happily stay again when we're back in the area.

The beds were the best part, and the staff were really nice. Rooms are a good size, with fresh paint, and it was clean with an okay breakfast. It's an old La Quinta they bought, and the pool area and fixtures could use a lot of work. At $85 a night, though, it was worth it.

The cockroach we found in the bathroom overnight was the last straw. We told the front desk, and they said housekeeping would bring clean sheets and take care of us, but the sheets were never changed and we ended up taking out our own trash. We got a small refund for the problems, but won't be back. I'd go somewhere else. There was hair and staining on the sheets, scratched-up walls, a rusty old lampshade, and dried food on the desk chair. The beds were very stiff and uncomfortable, and the pillows were tiny and useless. The hotel itself smelled musty and old, and the elevator floor was sticky with food on it. The ice machine was broken, the fitness center was closed, and the pool was dirty with huge spiders that looked like brown recluses.
