Hotel Gurnee

I came back after staying here three years ago, when the room smelled of smoke and the place looked like an unkempt Motel 6. The change since then is amazing. The investment and effort to bring in skilled professionals show a real commitment to the hotel business. This place is beyond excellent, and I’d absolutely recommend staying here.

The hotel looked beautifully decorated, and we had a great server. We went for Sunday brunch and the holiday events. There was a lovely group of holiday singers, and Santa was there too. The tree exhibit was having a party, so we couldn't see it this time. Brunch was just okay, though everything I tried was hot. The chopped salad on the buffet was excellent. I skipped the made-to-order food, so maybe that would have changed my impression.

We stayed in room 226 on 1/1/25. My mother-in-law booked it, and all four of us shared the room, so I can't speak to the price or the $100 check-in charge. The room felt unsanitary, as if it hadn't been cleaned after the previous guests. There was blood on the curtains, and the sheets weren't properly made. The beds were stiff and uncomfortable, and we all woke with sore backs, shoulders, and necks. The rooms were dry and almost muggy, and overnight the heat became unbearable even when set cooler. The walls are paper thin, and the doors slam on their own. We could hear very loud music from downstairs on the second floor, and it played most of the night over New Year's, when plenty of people probably wanted to sleep. The hallway smelled strongly of weed in some spots. Staff were just okay at best, and we got looks and eye rolls. There weren't any queen beds, and we couldn't find a TV remote. The pool was filthy, with things floating on the surface, so I couldn't even put my feet in. The hot tub was out of order, even though it was one of the main reasons we came. After seeing other bad reviews, I don't think I'll try the food either. Save yourself the hassle and book somewhere else.

The room was spotless and comfortable, and the whole hotel felt warm and inviting. The desk manager was welcoming and friendly from check-in through checkout. Stephanie at the bar was especially nice and professional, and made fantastic drinks. The owner is often around, personally checking that guests are happy, which adds a rare hands-on touch. Highly recommend if you're visiting Gurnee!
