Skyler at reception was very pleasant, and the housekeeping staff clearly worked to keep the place clean. Still, I felt robbed. We paid $748 for two nights over Indigenous Peoples' Weekend because we wanted to visit Acadia National Park and the White Birches Motel was one of the few options near MDI and Bar Harbor. I knew $748 was steep for the busy holiday weekend, but the week after IP weekend the same two nights would have been $180. At $325+ a night, it was nowhere near worth it. I would have found $100-110 a night acceptable, but I can’t recommend staying there on a holiday weekend. The beds were neatly made but felt worn out. The blue walls had scratches, the bathroom door wouldn’t latch, and parking was extremely tight even with a compact car. A strong, unpleasant air freshener smell filled both the rooms and lobby and lingered with me for hours after leaving. Coffee was available, but the carafe tasted of detergent, as if it had been washed and not properly rinsed. There was no breakfast food at all, which felt inexcusable at well over $300 a night. I can’t get those two days back.
The rooms are nice, with kitchenettes, and the staff are friendly. Shops and restaurants are only a few minutes away by car. Since it was the off season, staffing had been cut back. Trash wasn’t emptied from the rooms, the spaced-out bins had been removed so the only dumpster was 300 yards away, the room hadn’t been swept or mopped, and linens weren’t being washed and changed regularly. It would have been a much better-rated stay outside the off season.
The front desk receptionists were helpful, which is why I’m giving two stars instead of one. But I didn’t feel safe at all. We booked three nights and left after the second. The walls were paper thin, so we could hear everything from the rooms next door. On our second night, a man sat outside our door until 2am, drinking beers from a cooler and yelling into his phone. It was shocking. I suspect the motel rents rooms to long-term tenants who get too comfortable there. Our room was bare and uncomfortable, and the bathroom was so humid before we arrived that the toilet paper was damp. We had to go buy our own. On the second day, they also shut off the water without warning, leaving us unable to shower or flush the toilets. We left a day early and found another motel that felt more like a motel and less like a depressing halfway house. If the low price is tempting, reconsider. It wasn’t worth the cost or the hassle of trying to get a refund through a third party. I honestly would’ve felt safer sleeping in my car in a Walmart parking lot.
The staff were friendly and gave us a great weekly rate. Our room had lots of space, and I liked the cabinet storage. It came with utensils, plates, cups, pots, and pans. It was a pleasant stay for me and my family.
The biggest downside was the price, though it was a holiday weekend and we wanted to be near Acadia, so supply and demand. We had an end room and didn’t hear noise. The room was clean, with new LVP flooring and recently painted walls. The glossy paint made them shine under the six brilliant 100 watt overhead lights, so darkness wasn’t an issue. The small bathroom was adequate, the bed was comfortable, and the new wall heat pump was quiet and efficient. We found three ladybugs and I caught them and released them outside. Our curtain rod fell down, but I managed to put it back up. There’s no breakfast, just coffee and a few grab and go snacks.
