The Mantissa Executive Suites and Spa

The walls are thin, and from the ground floor I could hear a lot of noise from the restaurant across the way. My room also had mold in the shower corners. I was traveling alone, unfamiliar with the company, and uncomfortable raising it, so I cleaned it myself. I’d been given a first-floor accessible room despite not needing one, and the shower was crowded with equipment for people who did. At checkout I said that room could have gone to someone who needed it. They said they only assign those rooms when requested, but my work confirmed they hadn’t requested one. Please communicate better. I was there for business and initially got the impression I’d been given the last room available. The Sleep Number bed was old, no one explained how to use it, and there were no instructions. Tape held the batteries in the remote, which never worked properly. They advertise a full kitchen, but there was just one fork in the drawer and no food storage containers.

On the second night, I saw a bed bug crawling on the bed and called the front desk right away to ask for another room. They said my room type wasn’t available. I told them I didn’t care what type of room I got, I just didn’t want to sleep with bed bugs, and they eventually moved me. They didn’t offer any other help or solution. The apology felt lackluster, and when I mentioned the room change due to bed bugs to a different attendant at checkout, he didn’t acknowledge the issue or show concern or apologize. The stay was disappointing and inconvenient. The rooms don’t look like the pictures, and it didn’t seem like they were cleaned very well.

I was in town for work and was pleasantly surprised by how they handled things. My original room wasn’t ready, but they promptly found me a similar one since they were short on staff that day. Someone walked me to the room instead of just handing me a key and pointing the way, which was nice. The free lobby coffee was a good touch. I forgot my breakfast box when I checked out, though, and no one reminded me. Hopefully I’ll get one next time.

The room was gorgeous and well appointed, and the Sleep Number bed was really comfortable. We especially loved the big soaking tub after our 7.5 hour drive. The Mantissa was well worth the detour, even though it was a ways off I-95. There was a little confusion at check-in about the room type we’d booked, but they sorted it out quickly. At checkout, the person at the desk asked about a few small things that could be improved and carefully took notes. We’re always looking for nice hotels to add to our road trips, and this one didn’t disappoint.
