Hartwell Suites

The location is great, right downtown, and Hartwell seems safe and friendly. The pictures were accurate, and the unit itself was charming and unique. Still, we won't stay again. I booked through Hotels.com for convenience, but the door code didn't work and there was no one on site. I called every number, left voicemails, texted, sent Messenger messages and contacted them through Hotels.com. Amber called back almost an hour later, and the generic master code she gave us failed too. We were told to move across the hall, and eventually got into that unit. For the price, I expected much more. The floor was filthy, especially under the bed, which looked like it had never been cleaned. The bed was uncomfortable and the sheets didn't fit, seeming meant for a smaller bed. The towels smelled, and there weren't enough, so we bought towels and washcloths at Walmart. There wasn't enough toilet paper either, and the supplied one-ply was terribly cheap. A woman at the property, apparently cleaning a vacant unit on Saturday, gave us one extra roll. The thermostat seemed faulty because the unit never stopped running. There was a Keurig, one regular K-cup and one mug. Luckily I travel with my own coffee maker and supplies. The entrance door opens right onto the street, with no lock or safety measures, so anyone can come in anytime. Our car was egged right outside on the first night. I took photos, but it didn't seem worth reporting. I travel all the time and like supporting local businesses, but we should have paid less and stayed at the reliable, consistent Hampton Inn instead. Hartwell Suites needs to do better.

Hartwell is my second home, and seeing the town grow has been amazing. Our time there was a blessing, and I'm excited to see the place keep growing. I wanted to stay in a suite right in the middle of town so we could be near the local shop owners, and the location was great. I didn't need much service, so I can't say much about that. The room was nice, but $300 felt steep for just somewhere to sleep. The stove isn't really usable for cooking, so they might as well remove it and keep the microwave. After showering, my towels and the bottoms of my feet were brown and filthy. Maybe the floor isn't cleaned enough, or perhaps it needs a sealant to stop the natural floor from rubbing off. Either way, it was gross. The shower was so open that it got extremely cold, and it definitely needs some kind of curtain. The bed felt flimsy and uncomfortable. I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs, and my husband's 6'2" and 240 lbs, so I'd say we're pretty typical in build.

The suite contact was kind and quick to respond, and the location couldn't be better. I wasn't fully impressed with a few small things, like the floors and waste baskets. Maybe the crew getting the rooms ready could spiff them up a bit more. Still, I'd absolutely stay there again, and I'll give them five stars.

Cute place, and it's easy to get to right downtown. It was an unplanned night in Hartwell, and I thought the room looked adorable, but it was disappointing to find it dirty. The floors were gross, with spiders, webs and dead bugs. The sheets looked clean, but we had to wipe off hair and other stuff, and one pillow had a huge brown stain. The shower was terrible. Maybe the room hadn't been used in a while, I don't know. I'd maybe stay again to give them another chance. Please take the time to put trash bags in the trash cans.
