We couldn't get back inside that night. Around 10, the code no longer opened the front door. I called the number posted there but got no answer, and we knocked until another guest let us in. The code still wouldn't open our rooms. About half an hour later, the manager called and said the system had changed the codes because we asked to split the reservation, which we hadn't. The next day she offered a 15% refund and gave explanations for what happened. We didn't feel that was enough, especially as we were elderly and it was raining. There was no staff on site after hours, which we couldn't believe. We had booked two rooms for Nov 1th. When I made the reservation, I asked whether the credit card would be charged, since the rooms were being split between two groups. I was told it would only hold the reservation. At arrival, the receptionist said the card had been charged the full amount. I asked for an itemized breakdown so we could settle up. The door code we'd been given did get us into the rooms. In response to the reply: We didn't split the reservation at the desk. We only asked for an invoice so we could settle up between ourselves. My call was never returned. Roger called, and that call was returned promptly. Given the situation, we still felt 15% wasn't adequate.

We got an easy check-in: they sent a room code, so there was no need to arrive at a particular time to meet someone for a key. The hotel was a pleasant surprise for our first night of the trip. The rooms are small but clean, and the grounds are well kept, including a lovely little courtyard. It's close to several restaurants and directly across from the zipline tour departure point. We were there on the night of a local market right next door. We spent the evening eating at food trucks and chatting with a friendly local who had some great suggestions for our trip.

I'm a little late writing this, but we've stayed here both 1.5 years ago and 12 years ago. We absolutely love this little hotel. It's clean, quiet, comfortable, and safe, with nothing fancy, and room details are easy to access when you arrive. I lived in Hawi as a child and love coming back to visit. Since we love Hawi, staying here is an easy choice whenever we return to the Big Island. I hope Kohala Village Inn never closes. We need places like this to stay. I don't think there's another hotel or motel up north, and I don't generally like staying at AirBnBs anymore. So please keep the doors open! :)

The rooms were cozy and the location is convenient. It also had the best wifi of any hotel I stayed at on the Big Island. Still, hearing my neighbor's phone call crystal clear through the very thin walls was frustrating, even though she wasn't speaking loudly. The hotel was less than half full, so spreading guests across different rooms would have made the stay better. If you're staying here, chances are you didn't have many other lodging options.

The location was great, just around the corner from a coffee shop, stores, and a few restaurants. There's a courtyard with tables outside, and the rooms are cute and comfortable. The lobby has a microwave and water, and there's a fridge in the room. The front desk was kind, and they let me use an iron and ironing board. If staff aren't around, you can call them. They're there during the day, but at night it's just you and the other guests. Getting in and out was easy with the code they emailed us. For checkout, you just leave by 10 or 11am. After a fun day, I liked watching TV in the comfy bed. I don't have cable at home, and there were loads of channels. One small thought: lamps with power outlets or charging ports would help. We had to unplug the fridge and charge one phone at a time. Not a big deal.
