My family and friends enjoy that down-home back-street kind of fun, and this motel certainly gave us an experience to remember. The staff were efficient, though the smiles didn’t quite reach their eyes. Our compact room had a strange old-time feel. Crisp white sheets made you wonder about their history, while the patterned carpet seemed to hide its flaws. Fluorescent light made the bathroom fixtures almost blinding, and the air fresheners added their own layer to the room’s smell. The walls seemed to whisper about past guests, and were thin enough for us to feel connected to the neighbors. Toiletries were arranged like a treasure hunt, the plastic-wrapped remote added a bit of mystery, and the heavy dark curtains made a private little hideaway. What you see isn’t always what you get, and sometimes there’s even more to remember. Yours truly, Daniel P. Alston

I’d called the wrong location and somehow didn’t catch it, even though I was told more than once. Still, the man who answered was patient and polite with me. Thanks.

After nine days there, I asked to have the sheets changed. The manager argued about fresh bedding and said, quote, “we only change sheets once every 2 weeks.” Earlier, when I checked in, the room smelled like an ashtray, so I smoked in it. When I came back from work, they said they had to deep clean the whole room and charged me $130 to open the windows.

The housekeeper walked in while I was naked, well before checkout. At the front desk, they said I should have put up the do not disturb sign, then refused to give me the manager’s number. I shouldn’t have to worry about employees entering an occupied room well before checkout, then be blamed because I didn’t hang a sign. Do not stay here!

Three of the five staff members were nice, and that was the only good thing about the Economy Inn. We paid $89 a night and stayed for two weeks in a disgusting room. The carpet and furniture were so dirty that my wife’s bare feet turned black; I bought upholstery cleaner, and the towel I used on the furniture came away completely black. They moved us from our original room because the shower leaked behind the wall. Later, I didn’t get back to pay on time because I thought my wife had money on her card, and I’d forgotten my phone. They wouldn’t give us a break after all that money spent. They wanted my disabled wife to leave and walk three miles to a shelter, and couldn’t even offer her a ride.
