Country Haven Inn

We’ve been visiting Hillsboro for many years because my husband has relatives there, but this was our last stay at this hotel. It’s gone downhill, and I’m sad to see what happened to a place that used to feel so pleasant and cozy. The man at the desk was hard to understand and unfriendly. The hotel was hot and smelled stuffy and dirty. When I asked whether the A/C was working, he snapped that it was. I was only checking because it felt so hot inside.

The rooms were sweltering when we arrived around 10 p.m. over the 4th of July weekend. The AC was off throughout the building, including the hallways, and both rooms 202 and 203 had bedbugs. Our smoke detector had been pulled out, and the bath and hand towels were tiny and worn thin. We’d stayed here for years when visiting family, but the recent change in ownership hasn’t been good. I hate leaving a bad review, though this stay really wasn’t okay. I hope they take the feedback seriously and improve.

We’ve come back several times over the past four years while our son has been at Tabor College. It’s not fancy, but it’s always been clean and the staff have been welcoming. This time we arrived very late, and the new manager, Victor, went out of his way to help us feel comfortable and valued. We really appreciated his kindness, and his family’s too. Thank you!

Victor at the desk made this a pretty poor stay. He was very hard to understand, never smiled, didn’t tell us breakfast or checkout times, and just pointed when we asked where our room was. He said the printer was broken, so we never got a receipt. I’ve never dealt with a ruder clerk. The room itself was clean and adequate, but the towels were the worst I’ve seen at a motel. Getting there was difficult, and the place was badly lit at night. We left before breakfast, but what we saw looked very minimal. It’s a shame this is the only motel in town.
