Hilo Vacation Rental

We were really impressed with the room and the place itself. The host greeted us when we arrived and was very kind, taking time to explain everything. The view is great, and downtown Hilo is only about five minutes away. Just keep in mind that there’s no AC and a busy road nearby, which could be rough if you’re sensitive to heat or a light sleeper. Earplugs worked well for us. We came in winter, so the temperature was comfortable.

The house looked nicely furnished, had a good layout, and seemed tidy at first, but it really needs a deep clean. There was debris along the carpet edges, and the stair railing alone made it clear that cleaning was pretty minimal. The place seemed empty while we were there, so it’s hard to see why things weren’t cleaned or kept up better. We picked this room specifically for the custom spa tub, but tiles were broken and sticking up on the actual seat area. Unless you want broken tile digging into your backside, that’s a no from us. It also means the surface isn’t sealed anymore and can’t be properly sanitized. Ew. See pics. There are cameras all over, inside as well as outside. I don’t remember that being disclosed. It didn’t bother us, but it could bother other people, and listings should be accurate. We barely used the kitchen beyond the fridge and sink. One warning for anyone with kids: the disposal switch for the smaller sink is low on the side of the counter, where little hands might get to it. It was quiet and felt safe, but it wasn’t worth the price. I regretted cancelling our original Airbnb because I thought this would be a great birthday surprise upgrade for my partner. It wasn’t. The 9pm-8am quiet hours also seemed ridiculous, especially when someone next door started vacuuming a car at 7:30am.

It felt just like home once I got inside. The place was very clean and had everything needed for cooking. I also liked the convenience of the fridge with its water dispenser.

It’s a peaceful place and good value, and I’d definitely come back. The room was lovely, and the setup felt more like staying at someone’s home than at a busy resort. It was fairly quiet and not too far from town, with a well-equipped kitchen for making your own meals. I only saw the person who lives there a few times during my two weeks, and he was friendly and nice.
