SCP Hilo Hotel

SPC Hilo felt like a basic older hotel, closer to a Holiday Inn than a standard Marriot room, which is below that standard. Maybe my expectations are relative to the options in Hilo, since we didn't see any true 4 star hotels there. The check-in staff were nice, and the hotel was clean and somewhat updated in the minimalistic style mentioned in other reviews. The landscaping around the pool is nice, with rooms clustered closely around it. The room was small and clean, though the furnishings felt cheap and very basic. The TV was about the size of a computer monitor on a small desk. The two small double beds, pillows, and linens were fine, nothing memorable. There was a white plastic/aluminum handicap shower chair in the corner, although the bathroom has a tub rather than a walk-in shower, so I wasn't sure why it was there. The bathroom had no dedicated light. Its switch was on a wall outside, and turned on both the bathroom and the back area of the room, which was a problem if the other person was sleeping. The basic toilet and sink had no room for toiletries or cosmetics. Jets take off and fly right over the property, and the rooms don't block outside noise well. We could clearly hear people talking and socializing outside.

Ivonne and Cilla made us feel so well looked after, with warmth and attention that really stood out. We loved SCP Hilo's relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and its distinctive beauty. The pool was a favorite place to unwind, and the view from our room over the koi pond and water was stunning and peaceful. The thoughtfully designed lobby was lovely to spend time in. The gift shop was the best I've seen at a hotel, beautifully put together with things you actually want to buy. Having paddleboarding available was a fun extra. We'd gladly return and recommend SCP Hilo to anyone visiting the Big Island.

6 Stars. The staff at SCP Hotel clearly live out the mission on the mural by the front desk. When Capital One made a mistake with my reservation, they did a much better job fixing it than Capital One did. The building may be old, but everything was clean and well kept, and the rooms were comfortable. I appreciated the board games and the quiet places to play, as well as the exceptional morning coffee. SCP Hotel is a diamond in the rough, and I wish more hotels cared this much about all the little things. It'll be my preferred place to stay in Hilo. Shout out to Ivonne and Ili for being amazing. Ivonne was so awesome, I'll slightly root for the Cincinnati Bengals in her honor.

The staff were so kind, and the pool was really nice and surprisingly deep, which was fun. We stayed one night when we first arrived. As others have said, it's a redone motel, and the rooms look like the photos, which photograph well. The airport noise was more than we'd bargained for, but it's a good option if you need a clean, simple base in Hilo.
