66 Motel

The room had almost nothing in it, and what was there wasn't in good shape. There were no towels, barely any toilet paper, and the pillows looked dirty. The building seems close to a hundred years old, and I felt uneasy about the place. I only stayed because I'd already paid. Even ringing the bell about five times before anyone showed up didn't help that first impression, though check-in itself was all right. I'd save the money and look elsewhere.

We managed only a couple hours of rest before getting up and leaving. The bed felt dusty and unpleasant, and I was worried about bedbugs. The water smelled bad, dirt was visible on the toilet and sink, and the towels were visibly soiled. There wasn't even enough toilet paper for a few hours, and we could see a pile of trash from the room. We stayed only because we were exhausted and had prepaid. Nobody expects fancy, but guests should at least get a clean room.

We’ve stayed here several times and have always been happy with it. The rooms have clean mini fridges and microwaves, and the vintage decor is in good repair. It’s a cozy, quirky place with fair prices and really good service. Nothing fancy, but it feels cared for, like a spotless room in a favorite aunt’s old house, or a home cooked meal.

The owners were very nice, and the bed was comfortable. The window AC kept us cool, too. We needed to switch rooms because the first one had no hot water at either the sink or the shower, but the office quickly moved us two doors down. That room was much the same, with hot water and a microwave. Both were clean and had the basics, though the first room looked like it came from the 1950s, aside from the Wi-Fi, fridge, and TV. We knew not to expect chain hotel amenities, but the price still seemed high when a branded hotel was only a few dollars more. We’d stopped after a long day at the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest while traveling Route 66, and had hoped to support a local business.
