Quality Inn Homewood

The hallways smelled even worse than the rooms, and the whole place was filthy, with bugs on the wall, including one smashed bug housekeeping must have missed. We checked in and went up to our room, then decided we weren't comfortable staying there. We went back to the desk and got a credit on the card, though it was so awful we would have walked away without one. At check-in we were told there'd be no coffee at breakfast because the machine was broken. Both vending machines were out of order too, so there was nowhere to get bottled water. We moved to a Drury Inn for just a few dollars more. Choice Hotel brands have really gone downhill. This place is trash.

This Quality Inn was awful, by far the most disgusting place I've ever stayed. I'm from the hood and can handle a little wear and tear, but the moldy smell wouldn't go away no matter how much they sprayed. The carpet was damp, the room was very, very small, and the doors were covered in all kinds of filth. Knats were everywhere and roaches were on the wall. I cried knowing I had to sleep there for one night, then cancelled my Alabama trip and drove four hours home.

We arrived at 11:30 pm for a two-night stay and moved to a different hotel for the second night, even though it cost double. The lobby restroom was out of service. We were first offered a ground-floor room, but moved to the third floor because the AC unit was noisy. When I opened the AC control cover in the new room, cockroaches scattered. I was tired and didn't tell my wife. I checked the bed for critters and it was clean. There was no soap and only one washcloth, so the front desk took care of that. The fridge didn't work, and one side of the outlet by the bed was broken, so I unplugged the lamp to charge my phone. I slept well in the comfortable bed, and the wifi worked. In the morning I noticed the walls and floor were dirty, and breakfast was already all gone by 8 am. Next time I'll read reviews first. I feel for the lady at the front desk and what she has to deal with.

The room itself was decent and as clean as it could be, though it was clearly dated. The lobby looks like it may have been updated fairly recently, and both the desk clerk and maintenance man were friendly. Outside, though, the property looks so run-down that it was almost discouraging. The Choice Hotels photos don't really show how it looks in person, and the pool seems to have been closed for quite a while. That's why I couldn't give it five stars.
