Having a full kitchen was the reason we booked, since we were traveling on a budget and wanted to save on meals. The staff were amazing, helpful and attentive when we needed them, and Howard accommodated our special requests. We’re low maintenance and not fancy, so the lack of daily cleaning and the older, not very updated rooms weren’t a problem. It’s not a hotel, and I liked having privacy without people around all the time. With my kids in hotels, I’m usually telling them to quiet down and stop having fun. Here they called the room “home” more than once. It worked perfectly for us, and I’d stay again if we get the chance to return.

The location was a highlight for me, two blocks from the beach and a few minutes from just about anything you might want. In my opinion, the little triangle park out front makes this one of the nicer downtown blocks. I loved how quiet the room was too. The walls are thick enough that I didn’t know my neighbor had music on until I stepped outside. Management and staff were friendly, the room was clean, and a security guard greeted me when I got out of my cab at night. I appreciated management doing that. People complaining about the neighborhood are funny. It’s downtown in a city of a million, and to me it’s much better than you’d expect if you know mainland downtown areas.

For the price, it was fine, and getting around on foot was easy since everything we wanted to do was within walking distance. Our room was great, with a kitchenette, stove, microwave, and full-size fridge. They even gave us an air mattress at no charge, which was fantastic. The employee we dealt with most was friendly and really helpful, even with setbacks going on around him.

The location was central and handy, and the price was good for it. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was good, but we did find cockroaches in the room. Some of the timberwork was unfinished, with a roughly primed door and bare plywood on part of the wall. People kept coming and going to visit the building’s permanent residents, which felt a little unnerving.

The room smelled horrible the whole time, and there was trash in some drawers with random things left lying around. We paid close to $200 a night because of the season, but in my opinion it wasn’t worth even $80. The sheets on the beds were torn, and the fan above the bed looked like it had seen better days, with about half an inch of dust on it. The TV never worked and seemed to be there just for show. The bathroom needed a lot of attention too. This was my second trip to Hawaii, and it was my worst rental experience there. I’ve attached some pictures.
