The Hale House Inn

I had a lovely, low-key night in a comfortable double bed, then enjoyed breakfast with a pleasant couple from Houston. At that price, I couldn't ask for much more. Tim served Black Cherry smoothies and breakfast casserole with the other guests, and did both with equal aplomb. He's friendly and knows local history. The food's good too. The house is across from a well-kept park, clearly marked, and an easy walk from downtown shops and restaurants. I was there for one night and had a great time. Weekends get crowded with tourists, so I'd suggest a weekday. You can book online. Single occupancy rates are lower than a few of Hale House's neighbors, though local taxes add a bit. The interior feels like visiting an elderly relative, where you worry about touching anything. It's geared toward grownups, but there are books, board games and candy if you get restless. Rooms come in different sizes. Mine was set up for two, with a double bed and easy chairs. WiFi worked well, though it might get spotty in a storm. The TV is small, but in Jefferson I wasn't there to watch it. There's central heat and air, plus a window unit and ceiling fan. On a 70 degree night, I used all the covers with just the fan running. The bathroom was on the small side, and I banged my head on the door frame a couple of times, mostly because I wasn't paying attention. If mobility is an issue, ask about the layout. There's an antique dry sink in the hall with most toiletries you might've forgotten. Bring your own phone charger, though. The nearest Radio Shack is in Marshall.
