Best Western John Day Inn

The room was much more comfortable and spacious than we expected, with lots of amenities, and breakfast was hot with plenty to choose from. We were in John Day for one night to see the painted hills. This was the only place in town with king beds, so we booked without knowing what to expect. We were really pleased and would stay here again.

We paid $217 a night and got grimy sheets, a room that needed a deep clean, and a heating unit that rattled all night. We barely slept, and changed our plans to avoid passing through here again. The front desk gave a very depressing impression. The staff seemed unfriendly and unwelcoming, with no hello or welcome, the lights were partly off, and no one wore a uniform. The way they were dressed and had their kids with them made them look more like other guests or homeless people than hotel staff.

Saturday breakfast was tasty and well stocked, and checkout went smoothly. At check-in, the clerk was wonderful and explained where everything was. The front desk clerks’ appearance didn’t seem very professional. They wore sweats, T-shirts, a baseball cap, and a hoodie, with no name tags. We also saw a skateboard partly tucked under a couch. Best Western would benefit from making sure front desk staff look more professional.

The indoor pool was too cold for us, but we enjoyed the hot tub. The room was very nice, the bed was comfortable, and breakfast was included and good. We’ll stay there again when we’re in town.
