Comfort Suites Johnson City near University

We were in town for a family event and rented several rooms. Mine was spacious, and the bed and pillows were comfortable, but the sheet had what looked like a huge pee stain. Other relatives also said their rooms weren’t clean, and one found a sock left by a previous guest. I skipped breakfast because it ended super early, even on a weekend. I heard it wasn’t good anyway, and one family member said the biscuits were hard as rocks. This is another hotel that doesn’t clean rooms daily unless you ask. I was told that even when they came by on request, they only collected towels and trash and didn’t clean anything.

The rooms on the first floor were being remodeled, so maybe things will improve eventually, but it didn’t look like the work was moving quickly. There were no signs warning guests about the remodeling, unlike the hotel we’d stayed at the night before. The old “6 feet apart to slow the spread” signs were still on the floors and walls. The hotel website and signs claim they use hospital-grade cleaners on surfaces, which I doubt. The photos are misleading: you expect somewhere bright and welcoming, but it feels dark, cold, and uninviting. Even the snack bar looked post-apocalyptic, with empty shelves and only canned tuna left. Breakfast was okay, though not as good as what other places charge the same price for. My room smelled musty, the surfaces felt gross, and there was mold on the AC vents. I’m not high maintenance, but I felt gross in there. The unit sounded like a burping helicopter, humidity or not. It’s not the worst hotel, but for $50 more, the place down the road would very likely be better. In my opinion, staying here is a toss up.

I’ve never stayed in such a noisy hotel. Most of the noise was inside the building, not from the highway. The walls were paper thin; I heard everything next door, even their text message chimes, and the toilet flushing and someone peeing. Around 5AM, people, mostly workers, got up and slammed doors along the corridor. When they left, the maids started slamming doors too. I gave up on getting another hour of sleep and faced the four-hour drive pretty punchy. The windows had lost their seals and looked gross, so I shut the drapes. The key card locks kept failing, and I had to go to the front desk a couple of times. I was grateful to get the last room, and it was clean, with comfortable beds and clean hall carpeting. It’s sad because I’ve always liked Choice Hotels and the reviews seemed decent, but I’ll never return.

The breakfast cutoff at 9am felt early, since most motels serve it until 10am. I also had trouble understanding the receptionist. Overnight, my tablet didn’t charge because the wall plug behind the mattress had come loose.
