Aston Kona by the Sea

We only spent one night here after a problem with another reservation. Its location right on the water is convenient, and our two-bedroom unit was roomy and very clean. The balcony seating and ocean view were a real highlight. Check-in took a while, and although the compact property was nice, it didn't feel like somewhere we wanted to hang out. The busy road and first impression were just okay. Furnishings seemed a little dated. For a short stay, the $130 cleaning charge felt steep. I've stayed in better places and worse ones, so this landed in the middle.

A fully serviced apartment was a real plus, and the facilities at Aston Kona were very good. The location itself was excellent, though looking back, Hilo would've made a more practical base for a couple of days of National Park visits and walks, with less driving. The staff were friendly and approachable, but poor service took away from the stay. At check-in, nobody mentioned the additional refundable $100 security deposit on top of the amenity fees. Seeing the extra hold on my card was unexpected. When I asked, I was told that “seasoned travellers know how the system works,” which felt dismissive and unacceptable. We were specifically told our unit would be serviced on May 2nd. We were looking forward to fresh towels and a refreshed room after a long day at the National Park, but nothing had been done. The response when we asked was just, “I don’t know what happened.” We also reported a TV problem and were told someone would check it the next day. When we got back that evening, no one seemed to have come and it still wasn't working. After we followed up, we were told maintenance wanted to show us how to use the remotes. I fixed it myself in the end, because the cable unit hadn't been connected properly. Each thing might seem small on its own, but together it was frustrating. Clearer communication and follow-through would've prevented a lot of it.

The balcony overlooking the pool and ocean was fantastic, and the rooms were spacious. The kitchen was well laid out and stocked, and the location was very convenient, with a private spot to watch sunsets each evening. The considerate staff alone deserve five stars. The front desk was helpful, and the maintenance crew cleaned the pool, grills, and grounds every morning. They worked quietly and respectfully; we only knew they were there because we were up early having coffee on the balcony. It felt like a home away from home. I'd gladly recommend it and stay again.

This suited our family perfectly. We loved the pool and the ocean views and sounds, and being able to enjoy the island while saving a little money. It's a place for travelers who like doing their own laundry and cooking or grilling at home, with the option of eating out nearby in Kailua-Kona. It's not a resort hotel, so anyone looking for that should go north or south and pay more. The whole staff was phenomenal, from the front desk to the grounds crew and maintenance team. I can't say enough about how right this place was for our family. We hope to return soon!
