The most memorable part of our stay was the staff's Friendsgiving potluck. Every guest was invited, the food was great, and we got to meet other travelers while enjoying the marina. It felt really warm and welcoming for the holiday. We were there over Thanksgiving for my graduation trip, and the price for our family of five was, I believe, $109. The marina was lovely in the mornings, and check-in had an attendant, though the lobby itself was oddly shaped and tucked at the back of the property. There were a lot of forms to sign, and, yes, live chickens around too. Our room was clean, with basic kitchen appliances: a stove, refrigerator, oven, and microwave. Hand soap was provided, but the dispensers were empty of soap, shampoo, and conditioner. My mother spotted tiny bugs on the coffee machine, which we don't use on vacation, so we moved it and cleaned the counter. They didn't get into our food, and we didn't find other ant-like bugs in the room. There were puzzles and books in the room, the pool had good hours and extra toys, and it looked like renovations were still underway. Bike rentals cost extra even though bikes were already on the property. The rooms, hospitality, activities, and chickens made the three-and-a-half-hour drive to the last island in the Keys worthwhile. I'd recommend this island for tourist spots and great bike paths.

Watch your credit card statement closely if you stay here. I stayed in July, and the staff were friendly and the condo was clean. We expected the parking and condo fees, but were also charged a cleaning fee. We were told that fee would be refunded if we left the condo clean and without damage, which we did. Weeks later, instead of just returning the cleaning fee, they charged my card additional money. I spent weeks trying to sort it out with manager Jenny. She eventually refunded the cleaning-fee hold, but not the extra charge made over a month after our stay. She said she couldn't see that charge. I left two messages the next week and got no call back. I then reached Kay on the general number. She said the charge was strange and that Jenny had made it, even though Jenny had said she knew nothing about it. Kay promised to clear things up, then called the next morning to say Jenny had issued a refund. Four days later it still hadn't appeared. I've had to cancel my card number and file a fraud claim. Weeks after a stay, extra money was charged, and when I tried to resolve it I got the runaround and then no calls back. It feels like a sad scam, as if the workers are stealing from guests.

Cockroaches were already dead in the living room and kitchen when we arrived, and others were running across the counters. We followed the checkout checklist and left on time, but our deposit was never returned. When we've called, they either hang up or send us straight to voicemail, so we haven't been able to discuss why we're not getting it back.

The location was decent, about two miles from downtown, and parking was fine. The pools were okay, too. Everything else was a huge disappointment, and we wouldn't stay again. Our room was 85 degrees because the A/C didn't work, so sleep was poor. We were told breakfast would be offered Tuesday and Thursday, but it wasn't. One night the fire alarm kept sounding for over five minutes, so I called 911; we then had to wait outside for an hour. The next morning, a family member with a heart condition was trapped in the elevator for 25 minutes. Maintenance kept insisting we not call 911. We had also asked for a lower-floor room because of physical disabilities and were still placed on the third floor.

We arrived after hours, and our envelope was waiting with the keys and a note covering everything we needed. Thanks, Dave Smith and Jenny Eppy, for making my daughter's 21st birthday trip so fantastic. The apartment felt like home: clean, neat, and comfortable. The area around the office was colorful, cozy, and tropical, and the common spaces were lovely. We grilled burgers one afternoon on the clean gas BBQ right by our room. The pools were spotless and had noodles and floaties; there was also a hammock by the pool and a colorful BBQ seating area. Coconut Mallory is a hidden gem that gave our family memories to keep. Thanks again, David Smith and Jenny Eppy.
