Rodeway Inn Near Mt. Rushmore Memorial

We were too busy sightseeing to use the pool, though it looked great, so I’d love to come back and try it another time. The rooms were really nice, the breakfast was wonderful, and I’m always happy to have waffles. We all agreed this was one of our more pleasant recent hotel stays. The front desk staff were especially kind and helpful with our questions.

The room felt dingy and not very clean. Maybe its age played a part, but it was a real letdown. The hallway ceiling had a hole covered by plywood, and the whole place seemed extremely run down. The website photos gave the impression that you might see Mt Rushmore, but it’s about 15 minutes away and you can’t see it from the hotel. The area also felt less appealing than a typical tourist spot, with a shabby trailer park across the road and people sitting along the roadside. Nothing happened while we were there, but my husband wasn’t comfortable with me going to the car alone. I knew the price wouldn’t get us anything fancy, but the hotel was well below what I expected in that price range.

The location was exactly where we needed to be on vacation, but the condition of the building and the cleanliness alarmed us right away. There was a musty smell mixed with spices as soon as we came in, and the hand sanitizer was empty. COVID precautions didn’t seem to be followed. A young girl who appeared underage was at the desk and seemed to be there just to alert the manager when guests arrived. We felt that was poor management, and when the manager came, he treated us like a nuisance and was rude. The smell was stronger in our room. The carpet was coming up, the room didn’t seem prepared for us, and even the refrigerator wasn’t plugged in. The bedding had stains, and the bathroom sink faucet knob fell off when I tried to wash my hands. Within minutes I started having a respiratory reaction to something in the building or room. Since I was pregnant, my husband and I couldn’t risk staying. We asked for a refund and thankfully got one. We DO NOT recommend staying here.

The desk clerk was so nice, and the place and our room were clean. We found it online at a good price with okay reviews while driving from Green Bay to Mount Rushmore with my 12 and 14 year old sons on June 6. After a long drive, we just wanted somewhere clean and pleasant to sleep, and this did the job. The room was a bit small but adequate, quiet, and comfortable. There was a nice indoor pool, and the continental breakfast was basic but free. It was what I was looking for. I’d stay again and recommend it.
