Shutters on the Banks

Even with less than ideal weather, we had a wonderful stay at Shutters on the Banks. The staff were friendly and helpful, housekeeping came daily, and the whole property seemed well cared for. Our spacious, spotless room had modern amenities and a balcony facing the ocean. For an ocean view, book on the 3rd or 4th floor, which the reservation site labels that way. From there, it's only a few steps over the dune to the sand and surf. The hotel sits right on the beach, with the dune for protection. Breakfast had something for everyone, from fruit, waffles, oatmeal, and hot eggs to bacon, sausage, muffins, bagels, bread, yogurt, milk, juice, coffee, and tea. The hot items change each day, which was nice over several mornings. It's also easy to get to restaurants and shops in Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Kitty Hawk. I'd recommend it for a relaxing, comfortable Outer Banks stay.

The staff were nice and attentive, and the location was good. I was there for a wedding, though a Nor’easter lasted the whole weekend, which wasn't the hotel's fault. The place is decent but feels dated. My building didn't have an elevator, and I was disappointed there were no private balconies. Breakfast also fell short of what I expected from the other reviews.

I hated having to leave, and even days after getting home I still can't stop thinking about the trip. We're already ready to book for next summer. The room was comfortable, the indoor pool was warm, and the beach was very close and easy to reach. Breakfast was delicious, and I loved that it changed each day. We could use the pool and beach access before and after checkout, which was nice. Early check-in wasn't happening, not even 20 minutes early. We arrived at 1, called to ask them to let us know when the room was ready, and spent the time at the pool and beach. We saw the housekeeper finish our room about two and a half hours before check-in, but nobody called until 15-17 minutes before the official time. Since we were in the pool, we saw her leave and knew it had been clean for a while. There was even time for the ice maker to make ice before we got in. A couple of the front desk ladies weren't very pleasant, no hello or goodbye coming in and out of the lobby. Also, one uneven section of concrete caused my son and another child to fall. Still, I'll be back next summer.

The room itself was very nice and clean, and the shower had wonderful water pressure. We didn't eat breakfast there, so I can't comment on it. The service is why I gave three stars: over our three days, housekeeping knocked and opened the door before we could answer each morning. We only found the do not disturb sign behind the table lamp while packing to leave. Twice I told them we didn't need service, then came back in the afternoon to find the room had been serviced anyway. I appreciated the tidy room, but wanted them to respect our request and leave it alone. I don't know if they thought it might get them a bigger tip, but it didn't. We'll most likely stay again next year.
