The location was the only great thing about this hotel. Three families booked four rooms for the Devon Horse Show, three with two queen beds and one king suite. Between all of us, this was a sheer disappointment. We’ve stayed at Express hotels in other places and had beautiful, spacious, welcoming experiences, which is why we all chose the same one here. For $1,100.00 CAD for three nights, it was nowhere near up to par. We only stayed because we would have been charged either way. I will not recommend it. The first impression was just ick. The rooms were far too small and looked nothing like the website. One chair was broken. There was no coffee machine unless requested, no coffee or cups, and the box had only a lid, three tea bags, and one decaf pod. We got three bath towels, and the shampoo and body wash were cheap. The rooms smelled, the old bathroom taps had rust coming off them, and the tub was cracked and stained. Water pressure was poor and the drains clogged, leaving three inches of standing water while showering and brushing our teeth. Housekeeping had no extra bath or face towels on any of the three days. The AC worked well, but sat two inches from the bed, and I’m surprised my daughter didn’t catch pneumonia. Connor was the only staff member who was kind and helpful. I gave the hotel one star because of him.
The complimentary breakfast was delicious, and the rooms were very clean. Housekeeping did a wonderful job, and there was plenty of parking, which is a big plus when I’m traveling for work. My first week started with reservation trouble and difficulty getting into a room, but Monica did a wonderful job sorting it all out. The second week went smoothly. She remembered my name and made me feel like a person, not just another guest. I couldn’t have asked for better front desk service, and I’d recommend this place to anyone.
I can’t believe I’m giving this place one star, but I almost always ask Google for a way to leave no stars at all. I also petitioned IHG to let people remove a location in the mobile app, the way you can favorite one. The toilet didn’t flush properly, then ran all night. Sleep wasn’t happening, and I couldn’t wait for first light. I was close to booking somewhere else and leaving this shoebox empty. There are seven floors and one working elevator, which sounds like an OSHA violation to me. I thought popcorn ceilings were a fire hazard. The hall and room ceilings are so low that anyone over 5’7” would have to duck. A toddler could reach up on tiptoe and touch one. The TV was tiny, like something in an old-school nursing home. At what point is a 13-inch TV just a monitor? The only option was low-budget basic DIRECTV, basically channels 3, 6, and 10, plus Gilligan’s Island reruns. How many times can you watch Iron Man before you’ve had enough? The lovely young woman I spoke with on the phone never mentioned the place is behind a Hooters. Having traveled OMNI, Westin, Marriott…… I would never, in my wildest imagination or in my right mind, have booked here. Ratchosity is not in my DNA.
Monica was so sweet, proactive, and supportive about what was going on with my family. Not many people are as helpful as she was. She’s one in a million, and Holiday inn Express is lucky to have her. I was there for three days, and the staff were AMAZING. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and helpful. I’ll definitely come back if I need to.
I won’t be coming back. I’d rather drive another ten minutes and stay somewhere else. The room was okay at best, with broken handles, dust on a lot of surfaces, a rusted shower drain, and a small bathroom where there was barely room to turn around. Big signs in the middle of the sliding balcony door blocked the view. It was also hard to find the entrance without GPS, especially at night, and traffic from 202 kept me awake all night. The old elevators ran roughly. We lost power overnight. At checkout, I had to take the emergency stairs, which had ZERO lighting. I heard the front desk person tell someone on the phone the power had been off for about 30 minutes. I know it was out from at least 7am, when I woke up, until 9am. When I mentioned the stairwell lights, the same worker offered excuses: “Manager just turned them off” and “Power is back on so the emergency lights wouldnt be on.” I’ve stayed in better rooms.
