Comfort Inn Kings Mountain

I checked in at 7:00 PM on February 25, and Starr at the front desk made the experience really disappointing. She didn’t greet me, asked for my name harshly, then left to eat. When she returned, she was still chewing while talking and gave me unfriendly looks. I greeted her politely and was only there to check in, so I don’t know what I did wrong. Her behavior felt unprofessional. I won’t stay at this hotel again.

We ended up leaving early, even though we’d booked the whole week. After what we saw, my family and I couldn’t get any rest, so I got up and started packing. When I went to check out and ask for a receipt, expecting the refund process to take a while, the desk worker asked why we were leaving so early. I explained, and he just nodded. We travel for my husband’s job and have stayed in plenty of motels, but this was easily one of the three worst places I’ve been. I learned to always read recent reviews. The parking lot felt especially worrying after dark. My husband saw several drug deals and found fresh blood splattered outside when he took our youngest out to calm him down. Inside, the first floor smelled of wet dogs and cigarettes, and the whole place had a dingy odor. The rooms looked nothing like the photos. In our first room the fridge didn’t work, and there was a smashed roach right in the middle of the floor, which looked like it hadn’t been swept, mopped, or vacuumed recently. They got us another room quickly, but it wasn’t much better. The windows seemed filthy, and after I tried checking one with water and a rag, I wished I hadn’t. The bathroom mirror looked unwiped, there were two dead stinkbugs on the floor, the shower hadn’t been scrubbed, and a used bar of soap had been left behind.

The staff were nice and seemed to be working and cleaning all the time, but the hotel itself was old and run down, and the rooms looked nothing like the pictures. I’d talked my significant other into staying, though he’d been skeptical, and I can see why. The low price seemed to attract the wrong crowd, with people wandering the hotel and parking lots around 3 a.m. Smoking was going on inside despite the no-smoking rule. On our last morning the fire alarms went off, loudly. I’m not sure what happened, though I think it may have been something in the breakfast room, which wasn’t worth paying extra for anyway. We also came away with bed bugs or lice or something we didn’t have before the trip. I guess you get what you pay for.

The front desk staff were the one good part, nice and polite. The room barely seemed swept and clearly hadn’t been mopped in a long time. A card-access door to the building doesn’t close, so anyone can walk in, and the WiFi didn’t work, which made schoolwork a problem. The shower was lukewarm at best, and the drain was so disgusting that stuff floated up if you stayed in there more than a couple of minutes. There are still COVID signs all over the place, almost six years later. The location isn’t good either. I had a bad stay, so spend your money somewhere else.
