A family emergency meant I had to cancel my trip, and I followed Booking.com’s cancellation steps even though it was last minute. The hotel never emailed or called, and they wouldn’t take my call either. I sent an email as well. I can understand a cancellation fee, but making no effort to contact me or work something out feels like lousy, shady business.

For $92 a night, the room wasn’t clean enough. The curtains were hanging from one ring, so I stood on a chair and fixed them myself to get some privacy. The toilet needed plunging every time we used it, and there was a fight outside. The desk staff seemed not to care, and the person at checkout didn’t speak English. Breakfast was just a protein bar and coffee made with reused grounds.

The room was spotless, and the owners were so nice. Definitely worth staying here if you’re in the area.

I first stayed at the hearthstone in mid May, a week before school ended, because I was having a new trailer put on my land. I don’t smoke and have two autistic babies, so I asked for a non-smoking room. That first room was nice and clean. I only booked a week since I didn’t know how long I’d be there. When I paid for more days, they moved me and my kids to room 102, which was a smoking room. I didn’t realize that at first because the door was standing wide open as I carried our things in. A roach fell right in front of my face. I thought maybe it came in from outside, but after I shut the door I noticed the awful smell and burn holes all over the blankets on both beds, hundreds of them. Then I saw the ashtray and understood. I started recording the room. There was a dead roach in the tub, which wouldn’t drain because it was clogged, and the back of the toilet was broken. My kids could have been badly cut on it. When I came out of the bathroom, another roach crawled from behind the dresser. I didn’t complain because I didn’t know how long I’d be stuck there and didn’t want trouble. I did ask for blankets without holes because one of my autistic sons kept pulling stuffing out of them and putting it in his mouth. They refused to give us fresh ones without holes. After dark, I saw so many roaches coming over the sink from behind the mirror and the cracks where it meets the counter. My son later flushed a plastic cup and clogged the toilet. They replaced it, and the plumber told me my son had done them a favor because he’d already warned them the broken toilet was unsafe and they wouldn’t replace it. When I finally left around August 1, they tried to charge my card $500 for “damages.” I called to dispute it, but the woman got rude. I brought up the broken toilet, and they said I had to pay for one that was already broken. I told her I’d report the roaches and toilet to the health department. She started arguing about how the roaches weren’t their problem, so I hung up before my blood pressure went up. We’d just moved into a new house, and the first week was so busy I couldn’t report the motel until yesterday, when all my kids were at school at the same time. The plumber also told me they think smokers are nasty, so they won’t give them good blankets or care about broken toilets and clogged drains. I’ll never stay there again. They did take $100 from my PayPal, listed as “another nights charge,” putting my account $100 in the negative. I’d seen the attempted $500 before that and called. I think $100 would have been fair since my severely autistic son did knock down the curtain rod and swung a metal art piece on the wall, scratching it badly before I took it down and hid it in the bathroom. What really gets me is that they took the $100 and then tried to get another $500. I have proof on my PayPal. They’re disgusting people who don’t care about families with kids or people who smoke. They knew I had babies and still put us in a smoking room. It’s been over a week in our new house and the smell is still in my kids’ pillows and clothes. They also pay for reviews. You can’t trust what you see on Google or the booking website. They offer $5 off a night if you leave a good review.

I wouldn’t recommend it. The rooms feel dated and are extremely humid, and the beds are lumpy and uncomfortable. Water pressure is very low, and the toilets are tiny and unusually short. There also isn’t much else available in Lafayette.
