New Sungate Motel

The bed and shower were fine, and the staff were decent, though this is a small place so you need to plan around when they’re there. The room has a microwave, toaster, and refrigerator, but nowhere to cook. If you’re staying for a discount while visiting family, it works well. For anyone else, read the listing literally: breakfast was two eggs, two slices of white toast, and sausage, with no alternatives if you don’t eat sausage. No fruit, grits, or oatmeal, and it was the same each day of my five-night stay. If you don’t smoke, or you’re bringing kids, this may not be the place for you. Check my photo.

The food was very good, the room was nice, and the housekeepers were friendly. I might have rated this place 5/5, but one woman, whose name I think started with a T, kept yelling at people and being rude. Once, she yelled at someone for wearing what looked like a normal bathing suit to the pool. I’m not sure she even works here, since I never saw her do anything except yell. It happened throughout my stay, and may put me off coming back.

The only reason I’m giving any stars is the kindness I was shown as I left. When I arrived, I spent hours cleaning and even steam-cleaned the floors, then was told there’d be a nonrefundable $50 pet cleaning fee for my service dog. The dog wasn’t allowed on the floor until I steam-mopped it. The room was supposedly “just remodeled,” but between the burn marks on the beds and the unstable Wi-Fi and TV connections, I wouldn’t stay here again. The room should be gutted.

Service was decent once I got help, though I had to wait a while for the front desk before I could check in. I was working double shifts then, so I was awake late and up early. Around 2:30 a.m., I turned out the light to sleep, then switched it back on briefly to get something from my bag. There was a small group of roaches beside the bed, so I checked out right away.
