The Oread Lawrence, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

The location is convenient, close to campus and downtown, but the service and amenities don't feel right for a 4-star hotel. I called to ask for a toothbrush, and instead of bringing one up, they told me to go downstairs and buy a mini one for over $4. There are no robes, even on request, which seems like a basic thing to offer at that level. My room felt sparsely designed, and some of the fixtures weren't thought through. The towel rack, for example, was beside the toilet instead of the sink.

I paid $200 a night for a king suite with terrace, and the terrace with chairs, a table, and an overlook view made it feel worth it. The hotel had a classy atmosphere, friendly staff, nice elevators, and a modern, clean room. The bathroom was clean, with plenty of extra towels and stocked products. The sheets, comforter, and pillows were comfortable and clean, though the bed had a strange slope where I laid my head. I hadn't realized parking cost extra when I booked. Check-in and checkout each took about 10 minutes, and the front desk attendant spoke too quickly for me to understand the parking details. I parked in the secure garage, in the stall assigned to my room, but my card was charged $75 for parking even though I stayed only one night. I'm not sure why.

I booked with Hilton Honors points, so I couldn't cancel before check-in. I'm dreading the check-in now and looking for somewhere else, though switching would cost me a lot more. This experience has made me reconsider future Hilton stays and my loyalty to the brand, despite having stayed at many Hilton properties for business and personal travel. The staff seemed disengaged and unhelpful. When I asked about early check-in, I got a flat no, with no explanation or alternatives. I understand a hotel might be full, but some courtesy or a suggestion for what to do while waiting would have helped. Hilton Honors couldn't reach the front desk when I contacted them for assistance. It also seemed the young staff were more focused on their friends attending events at the hotel than on paying guests. I'd strongly recommend avoiding this property unless you have a personal connection.

We stayed in a fun castle and got a surprise upgrade to a patio bigger than the room itself. The rooms were clean, modern, and comfortable, and the staff were friendly. The restaurant was great too, with delicious food and drinks. Try the Oaxacan Old Fashion and the mac and cheese!
