MainStay Suites LeClaire - Quad Cities

We stayed twice, once before our two-day Twilight Riverboat adventure and again after we returned. For the money, both visits were satisfying, and we both slept well in the quiet hotel. Our ground-floor rooms were adequately clean, with comfortable double Q beds, pillows, and linens. The front desk area was being renovated, so check-in was at the adjoining Comfort Inn, which was fine. We liked having the sink separate from the main bathroom and brought our own toiletries. There were far too few outlets for our electronics.

The renovation fumes were awful, and there was paint and plaster everywhere. Our room wasn’t even finished. A notice in one construction area said work should stop immediately, but it continued. They moved us to the Comfort Inn side, though that room wasn’t great either, so we checked out a day early. The hotel is owned by Comfort Inn but isn’t connected to it. There’s no elevator, and you have to walk around the outside of the building to reach the desk, pool, or breakfast. Renovations are a good thing, but they should close the place until the work is finished.

We only got this hotel because the flood had filled up the others. The bed was painfully uncomfortable, the pillows were travel-sized, and the mini fridge never got cold. The water temperature was the one nice thing. This felt like a slum hotel run by a slum company. I should’ve driven 20 minutes farther to get a full night’s sleep.

The rooms were spacious and clean, and the check-in staff were nice. The whole setup is unusual, with the hotel split into two areas around the Comfort Inn. You have to go outside to reach the breakfast, pool, and exercise area. The view could be better enjoyed with some landscaping, and the place could use a fresh coat of paint. Maybe it was because we were away from the main area, but the hallway smelled like marijuana all weekend. Thankfully, it didn’t get into our room.
