Amber Inn Motel Le Mars

The rooms are excellent, and Amber inn is just right for us since we love motels where you can pull right up to your room. Those are hard to find. We'd stay again if our travels bring us nearby.

Big, clean room and everything worked 😎. The woman at the front desk was awesome and tried to help when the laundry room change machine kept my money, though she didn't have change and I never got my money back. Also, the no-cooking rule is a little confusing when there's a microwave in the room.

I hadn't had any trouble here before this year. I canceled my Friday reservation on Thursday, more than 24 hours ahead. I called and was told they would cancel it on their end, and that I should cancel online too. Their site only let me contact them, so I sent a message saying I needed to cancel the room. Two days later, the charge showed up on my card anyway. When I called, the guy said they had no record of canceling it and couldn't speak to anyone because “no one” was there. For a hotel that's open 24/7, there's always someone available.

We were just looking for a place to rest between the Black Hills of South Dakota and Ohio, so we ordered pizza and went to bed. The hotel is basic, though it looked like it had been remodeled fairly recently, and the woman who checked us in was friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was pretty standard, with a waffle maker and egg and cheese omelettes. But the TV was blasting Fox News in an otherwise empty breakfast area. We wanted a quiet meal with our family and didn't want to listen to biased cable news. There was no remote nearby, so I switched the TV off. A few minutes later an older employee came in, seemed bitter and complained, then found the remote and put Fox News back on even louder. We were nearly finished, so we went back to the room to get ready to load the car. Later I greeted the same employee, and he didn't respond. We would have rated the stay higher if we hadn't had to deal with him.
