We spent two days at Wilderness Lodge and still didn’t fit in everything, including the hot tub, shuffleboard, and bocce ball. The lodge has so much to enjoy, from long walks on the property and the putt-putt course to rec room activities, vintage board games in the cabin, and books scattered around the rooms, reading nook, and library. We loved winding down by the cabin fireplace at night, and the breakfast, lunch, and dinners were delicious. Becky’s excitement about what’s ahead for the place is contagious. Dan makes a good drink and brings plenty of energy behind the bar, while Charley and the rest of the staff are always checking that you have what you need. We’ve just finished our annual, sometimes twice-a-year, visit. The new stewards are doing a phenomenal job maintaining the quality and amenities at this historic gem, and we noticed upgrades and upkeep that made the stay even better. When we’re planning time off together, this charming, feel-good lodge is at the top of our list.

The dinner food and service were both very good, but that was the only bright spot for us. Check-in on the first day amounted to being told when dinner started. Nobody explained the lodge, its amenities, or even basic things about our cabin. The next day we found mice in the cabin, so many that at night we could hear them running through the walls and had trouble sleeping. Now that we’re home, we’ve just been to the pediatrician with our 9-month-old son, who is covered in ringworm spots. Given the condition of the place, the price is wildly out of line. I found the stay incredibly disappointing. Save your money, have dinner somewhere else, and stay at a simple motel instead. You’ll be better off.

We didn’t have to bring food or cook, since the package covered meals, plus appetizers each night in the bar area. You pay per person rather than per cabin, and for us it was well worth it. This place feels like another world, though it’s close enough for a quick getaway, and we’ve already started planning another trip, maybe even a family reunion. The cabin was rustic but furnished, though there was no hair dryer, and we especially loved the screened porch. There’s mini golf with recently replaced turf, an air-conditioned rec building with ping pong beside the playground, and an in-ground saltwater pool. Some cabins have beach access across the road, and we could also use the beach at the campground next door. We fell in love with this hidden gem.

Everyone on staff was great, but with a price that high I expected a much better stay.

This was our second visit, and we’ll be back for sure. It’s a very family-friendly place where we spent most of our time outside, fishing, swimming, floating on the river, walking the trails, and enjoying nature. We spent several days fishing the Black River, playing games outdoors and in the rec room, and disconnecting from technology. There’s no TV and service is spotty, but we liked that. Blaine made this trip extra special by talking fishing with us and catching crawdads for bait. The rooms aren’t fancy, but both times ours was clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The new mattresses this year were super comfy. Breakfast, dinner, and the bagged lunches were good, and the Black River cake is delicious. If you’re looking for luxury accommodations and service, this probably isn’t the place for you.
