We could walk straight to the shops and restaurants in Lewisburg, which made the location really convenient. The Thomas Rose Inn also had thoughtful extras, like chilled champagne and wine in the fridge and coffee and tea in the shared area. It was a lovely place to stay in the middle of a charming small town. I'd come back for the chocolate festival or just for a cozy break.

The room was very nice, and I appreciated having drinks in the lobby. Still, the check-in interaction has me doubtful I'd stay again, especially with a nice boutique hotel just around the corner where I've always had a warm welcome and a smile. I booked through a third-party app using points, so I had no say in how it sent my reservation, and it didn't include a phone number. When I arrived at the stated 3 pm check-in time, a sign on the door asked me to call for help. I was happy to do so, but when I gave my name and said I was checking in, the woman sounded exasperated. She said she'd been waiting all day for me and would text the information. I was taken aback, told her I was just trying to check in, and ended the call as quickly as I could. I've stayed at the General Lewis and Greenbrier many times, and that tone felt uncalled for in this situation. She texted the information and added that she hadn't been rude. I hadn't called her rude, I was just surprised at how put off she sounded when a guest called at the designated check-in time for access. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she didn't need to take it out on me. There were plenty of ways she could have handled the call.

The bathroom was new and really nice, and Suite 3 had what we needed, including a little kitchen area, though I couldn't find any silverware. The original floors were neat, but watch your step since I tripped in a few places. The locks and doorknobs took some figuring out, too. Everything was within walking distance. My only real complaint was the bed. It was so uncomfortable that I tossed and turned all night, and it needs a new mattress or a good topper. I still gave it five stars because that was the only downside.

The Thomas Rose Inn feels quiet and quaint, and it's in a great spot for walking to shops and restaurants. I felt right at home. There's no staff on site, but they're always reachable, and complimentary wine and other drinks are there whenever you want them. The rooms are decorated to suit the period, with modern comforts mixed in. I liked the soft pink tones, a welcome change from all the grey you see everywhere. The soft drapes, vintage dishes, carnival glass, and colonial chandeliers give the place a lot of warmth and charm. A quality stay, lovely from top to bottom.
