Black Horse Inn

I’d stayed at this inn under its former owners, so while vacationing nearby in July we stopped to see how it was doing with the new owners. We were appalled by its current condition. The lawn was neglected, trash was scattered around, people were under a tent among the trees off the driveway, and the inn’s doors and windows were left open. It looked more like a crack house than a vacation destination. The new owners need to hire different managers or the place may end up ruined, which would be a shame given the location and views.

The rooms were beautiful and clean, and ours had a large jacuzzi bathtub. The owner was so kind and sweet. She made us breakfast and spent the morning telling stories. It’s a wonderful inn.

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the dated interior could have had charm. But the rules and staff left us feeling merely tolerated. We weren’t allowed to use any indoor common space except the dining area during set breakfast hours. The main common room was full of boxes, and there were Christmas decorations at the front desk in June. We arrived by bicycle and were told not to lean our bikes anywhere, but to put them in the woods. We like animals, though the small resident dog seemed hostile toward guests. Accommodation choices along this stretch can be limited, so I’d consider staying a little farther north or south.

The homemade food was exquisite, and the staff and owner were incredibly kind and caring. It felt cozy like a B&B but roomy like a hotel. This is the best B&B I’ve ever been to, and such a pleasant stay. It’s close to lots of good places, including Lincolnville Beach, the mountains, and hiking. Worth every penny, and I’ll definitely come again!
