Colton Inn

The bed and shower were decent, but my one-night stay was a total failure. Our bags were delayed on the way to the USA, and the airline wanted to deliver them to the hotel. That was a problem because we hadn’t arrived yet, and it took a lot of effort before they agreed to accept them. After dinner, my key wouldn’t open the room at 21.15, just after reception had closed. There was no emergency number on the door. We found one online and called, but only got an automated message asking us to leave a message. Nobody called back, despite our attempts, so we booked another hotel for the night and dealt with it the next day. Reception opened at 7.00. I explained what happened to the woman there, expecting some compassion, an apology, or compensation. Instead she asked why I hadn’t brought the other key, said I’d probably disabled it with a magnet, and said we’d called the wrong number. She seemed to think getting locked out and being unable to reach help was my fault. I was perplexed. For a refund, she said we’d have to contact booking.com. While she made a new key, I went to breakfast, which was very pathetic too. I wouldn’t want this vacation experience again.

The front desk team made a tough morning much easier when my car wouldn’t start. They found us a room for another night, had the groundskeeper try to jump-start it, and let us park in an area where we weren’t supposed to. They were understanding and did everything they could to help. Earlier, we’d enjoyed the balcony view of a beautiful creek and the sound of the water and rainfall. The room also had a welcome note and candies congratulating us on our anniversary. The Colton Inn is perfectly located in Monterey, and thanks to the team, our anniversary weekend was much better than it could have been. We’ll be back soon!

I’d give it 4.5 stars if half stars were an option. The room was comfortable, clean, and spacious, with a very comfortable bed and pillows. I was there for a conference and didn’t spend much time in the room, but the location was excellent and staff were helpful. Breakfast was good too, with hard boiled eggs, waffles, cereal, yogurt, and pastries. I’d recommend it and stay again.

No AC, but our windows opened. We were on the second floor at the back, so there was no noise or burglary concern. The ceiling fan was in a super weird spot near the windows. The beds and pillows were comfortable, and the shower had an option for a full blast rinse. The hotel was very clean and desk staff were friendly. Breakfast wasn’t worth grabbing, but there are at least five places within a 10-minute walk. We told our children to recommend it to anyone visiting town.
