That coast setting is hard to beat, and the price felt reasonable for a comfortable stay. I was in the Albion, so I can’t speak for the other cottages. Inside, two corner windows frame a magnificent view of the Mendocino coast. There’s a good-sized living room, full kitchen and fridge, a little table for four, and a bedroom where the queen bed takes up most of the space. Its sliding door opens onto a balcony, and there’s a full bathroom too. I’d requested decaf ahead of time, and it was waiting with a small bottle of local white wine. The thermostat and self-igniting gas fireplace control the temperature. There’s no internet unless you connect to the property Wi-Fi, which worked well, about 60 Mbps in this bungalow. The balcony itself mostly faces the exit road and the side of the bungalow in front, though I think the other balconies may have better views. The furniture was quite worn, and the living room couch that pulls out into a bed was hard and uncomfortable for sitting and watching TV. My biggest issue was ants all over the bathroom, though nowhere else. The property contact quickly said they’d take care of it, but I was leaving before they could. I should have told them sooner. So, a solid three-star place in a four- or five-star setting, comfortable rather than luxurious.
We had a great weekend here with our pup. A lot of other guests had dogs too. The fireplace made things extra cozy in the rain. We cooked a few simple meals, and while the kitchen had everything else we needed, I’d bring my own pan. The coffee and wine were yummy, checkout was easy, and they answered our questions promptly.
From the upstairs deck, the ocean views were awesome, and the location worked well: the Little River Inn Restaurant is just up the road and downtown Mendocino is only minutes away. Our stay in the Ignacio cottage was two nights. There were some upkeep issues, though. The outside light by the front door was burned out, the upstairs slider wouldn’t lock, and the TV didn’t work. The windows need cleaning, and the landscaping, especially the not-at-all-green main lawn, needs some care and repair.
The bed setup took some figuring out. There’s a small pullout futon, but we made it work. Make sure its sheets are in the room before the front desk closes at 8 pm. Ours weren’t where the room information said they’d be, so we had to ask for them to be brought over. The little cottages are nice, with a view, a kitchen, and an outdoor grill.
We liked being able to cook for ourselves, especially making breakfast before heading out, and ended up adding a second night. The rooms were modest, but clean, warm, and peaceful. They even left a sweet welcome kit for our dog. In mid March we had the whole place to ourselves, which felt magical. You can see and hear the ocean from the cottages, set back from HWY 1, and one evening we walked out to the bluff past the blowhole. Incredible, and a must-see. Downtown Mendocino and lots of state parks are close by, and the hotel bar next door is a two-minute walk. We woke to deer in the garden on our last morning. Thanks for a really peaceful stay with ocean views. We were in the Gualala cabin.
