Embassy Suites by Hilton Detroit Livonia Novi

The first impression was lovely. This was our first stay, and walking in felt luxurious. We paid $400 for four nights with my family, which seemed reasonable. The free breakfast and first complimentary drink at the bar were nice, and I liked that quiet hours were somewhat strict. Our room also had its own AC unit. The female front desk worker and female bartender were very friendly. We didn’t see much of the other staff because we preferred not to be disturbed, and they respected our Do Not Disturb sign. There were several room problems, though. The curtain between the living room area and the rest of the room had red marks, which I hoped were chips. There were odd spots on the bathroom walls that I hoped weren’t mold, a cracked living room outlet, and a hole on the outside of the bathroom door. The showerhead couldn’t be moved, so water spilled onto the floor, and the bins had no small trash bags. The room was called clean, but I wish they checked rooms before making them available. The sofa bed was very uncomfortable for me, and I wouldn’t put anyone with back problems on one. If your room is beside the stairwell doors, expect noise when people open them at night and in the morning. The hotel has an indoor pool, restaurant, bar, fitness center, and free WiFi, so it’s a nice place in many ways. I can only give it three stars because of the room issues and noise.

Breakfast was amazing, and there’s a Dave & Buster's right next door. The hotel is about 15 minutes from several shopping areas, so the location worked well for getting around. My room was huge, with separate sleeping and sitting areas. That would be handy for a family, but felt like a lot of space for two people. The pool is unusual, but it was loud and full of kids, and the strong chlorine smell carried through the hotel. We couldn’t work out how to adjust the room temperature. The carpet needed repairs, we had no towels when we arrived and had to ask more than once, and I don’t think the bathtub had been cleaned. The elevators were very slow. The workout room was small but had nice equipment. I’d say it’s a good fit for a large group or families with young children.

We were there Feb. 27th - March 1st in room 400. The sheets and bathtub were clean, and breakfast was good. The complimentary drinks at the bar were a nice extra. There were stains on the walls and someone had carved into one. The toilet was dirty, and although the room had a balcony view, the balcony wasn’t worth it. The pool was out of service. The place needs to be cleaner and updated. Fixing those issues could make it a four-star stay or better.

The worst part was how crowded the pool was. We could barely get in, and after waiting an hour for food, we only had 20 minutes to swim. At 10pm security came over yelling, “kids get out!!!” It felt unreal. At other hotels I’ve seen them allow another 5-10 minutes, but here there wasn’t room to swim in the first place. We picked this hotel because the pool looked great in the photos, and because of its location and restaurant. We were in town for a cheer competition and in a hurry, but had to door dash food after waiting because one person was working both the bar and restaurant and couldn’t serve many people. I also had to pay an extra 25$ to check in early, just 30 min. early, only so we could use the bathroom. When we got to the room there was no toilet paper, even after we’d used the bathroom. There was no soap, shampoo, conditioner, or anything else. The floor was covered in hair and dirt, and the sofa bad my son had to sleep on was dirty, crumb-covered, and had no sheets or bedding. Dave and busters nearby was the only good thing, somewhere to escape to. The photos made everything look great, but the stay was disappointing and disgusting. The hallways smelled of pot, and there were some MIPs being given out in a hotel two doors down from us, to put the icing on the cake. I told the front desk and emailed afterward. They supposedly gave me points, but not many, and I didn’t think that was right without any reimbursement. I complained by email and got no response for a week, until I wrote again. This was by far my worst hotel experience, and I could go on and on.
