The Upper Pass Lodge at Magic Mountain

The room had lots of space, with two double beds and a bunk bed. There’s a small gift shop and a little restaurant, but no AC in the rooms. They have split AC, though ours was programmed to heat. One thing I learned the hard way: check-in isn’t available after 8 PM.

We had 50 people here last week for the 7 day summer camp I run at Magic Mountain every year. Upper Pass Lodge is our place to stay, and their restaurant, Red Slate, handles all our food. It’s a safe, homey base in the heart of adventure, with hospitality that’s next level. The kids can be kids, and you can get tips on local hikes, swimming spots, farm visits, and more. We feel at home here and have built personal relationships with the families who work there. This isn’t a spotless corporate hotel. It’s dog friendly, pipes creek, there are water stains on parts of the ceilings, and kids run around barefoot. That relaxed, unpretentious feel is part of what makes it perfect for us. Vince, Megan and Lauretta make the place special. Vince, the owner, works from 7am to 11pm every day and hasn’t had a day off in over a year. Some things do get ahead of him, but that’s part of why it’s affordable and in such an incredible location. He’s always updating the place and making improvements as he can.

We had a great football Sunday here. Dennis behind the bar was great, and the football Sunday menu was cool. Get the $5.00 smash burger. We also had a couple of flatbreads and wings, and all the liquor was Vermont liquor. Vinny was amazing and helpful as always. It’s a couple of blocks off the main path, but well worth the stop.

The staff were friendly and pretty accommodating. This is a ski lodge that’s been through plenty of winters and harsh weather, and the wear shows on the building. The rooms really need updating and a thorough cleaning.
