Forty First Place - Boutique Hostel

We barely got eight hours of sleep across our four days here. There was no housekeeping and we never got clean towels. The walls are paper thin, so we heard everything, including the tenants upstairs moving furniture all night on the third night. The first night was freezing. Management said the thermostat was on the third floor and set to 62 degrees. I changed it, but other tenants kept changing it back. When I asked for another blanket, management said no. At 3:30 a.m. on the second night, smoke alarms woke us. A girl had the top of the stove in flames, the smell was awful, and we were up the rest of the night. I’m surprised the fire department didn’t come. On the fourth night, LAPD were in the kitchen yelling for the upstairs tenants to come talk. They cuffed the woman and took her away. Police said the tenants had broken into unit 5 in the front building. Michael was her boyfriend, and they read him his rights. They later released them, and after police left, the couple fought all night. This was the worst experience. Please stay somewhere else.

The creative rooms have their own style and character, and the place felt personal rather than cookie-cutter. They’re modern and fun without giving up comfort, and you can tell care went into the design. The property was spotless and well looked after, which made it easy to settle in. Staff and housekeeping were friendly, professional, and on top of things. From arrival, the experience felt welcoming and well managed. I’d stay at Fourth First Place again and recommend it to anyone after a clean, unique place with good energy in LA.

The area didn’t feel very safe to walk around at night, so I’d get a rideshare if you’re heading out late. My one-night stay was otherwise really nice, with a comfortable room and no neighbor issues. A white noise machine would help muffle outside sounds or fill the silence.

For a special occasion, we booked the Deluxe Suite and had a memorable, relaxing stay. It felt private, and the calm boutique atmosphere added to the experience. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Great value, and we’d definitely come back.
