The room itself needs work. Our mattress had a crater on one side, as if something heavy had landed on it, and my husband had to put up with it all night. We only noticed once we lay down, though I can't believe housekeeping missed it. We asked for another room and got one, which was a major hassle. I didn't ask for a discount, but wish I had. The outside screen door was broken too. Maybe it'll be fixed by spring. We knew breakfast wasn't complimentary like at the other Marriott nearby, but on Monday I was surprised I couldn't get coffee after 9:30. I won't use the in-room coffee makers because I don't know when they've been cleaned inside or out. There was a strong perfume smell throughout the motel, including a blast of it when we opened our room door. At the front desk, they pointed out a unit that they said spreads air freshener through the building. Has anyone considered that some people have fragrance allergies? The smell was still on our coats and belongings when we got home. Parking and walking around were a problem for our whole three-day stay after the heavy snowfall. It had stopped snowing at least 18 hours before we arrived, and the front area was clear, but they directed us to park at the side near the elevator. That lot hadn't been plowed, and the sidewalks were dangerous with ice and snow. Getting a luggage cart through the slush was extremely difficult. The lot and walkways never improved, even when there were no cars parked there. You'd think they'd worry someone might fall and sue. This Courtyard by Marriott Mahwah doesn't live up to the Marriott reputation I've come to expect. I'm very disappointed in the Marriott facilities around Mahwah, and there seems to be a problem with them in the area. Perhaps I'll find one where management takes some pride in the place.

The room was spotless, the bed comfortable, and we loved the balcony view, modern alarm clock, and TV. The courtyard looked recently remodeled, and it felt like good value for the comfort. But what really stood out was Stella at check-in. She welcomed us with such a calm, kind manner that it felt like seeing an old friend. She helped us get settled and sent us on our way, and I don't usually call out hotel staff by name. Stella is a jewel among gems. When we walked into the lobby, the lovely, refreshing clean smell put our minds at ease after all the hustle and bustle. Thanks to everyone working hard to keep this place great. Yours truly, the TexasMarriottExplorer.

Last year we liked the hotel, though we were caught off guard that they rented out the pool for part of the day. This time we knew the schedule and thought we could plan around it. But the pool was disgusting: discolored water, a black floor, hair floating on top, and some strange oily stuff. I'm not kidding. The hotel is great, but if you want to use the pool, go somewhere else.

Even after they declined to let us stay, they still charged me. The general manager was absolutely rude, condescending, and, in my experience, very discriminatory. There was no point raising concerns or asking for a resolution. It's sickening when you're supporting a business by going there. I'll escalate this to higher-ups at the company. Save your money and stay elsewhere.

I searched the dark closet twice for the hair dryer and still had to call the front desk. It was hidden, and finding it wasted time when I was trying to get out the door. People shouldn't have to go on a hair dryer hunt anymore. Wake up, Marriott Mahwah, women travel, work, and spend money. There are plenty of other places nearby where my needs aren't an afterthought.
