I stayed in Na Bolom, where the walls are made from “papercrete,” shredded newspaper. The place has lovely artsy buildings made with repurposed materials, and the view of the surrounding mesas and starry sky is beautiful, especially from the nearby community tower. The bed was comfortable, the shower hot, and the kitchen well equipped. Ingrid kindly led me right to the house, helped me settle in, and answered a few questions. It’s an easy 1.5 hr drive to the eastern side of Big Bend, and I’d love to return. At this price, a few updates would help, like brighter shower lighting, newer blinds, and a deep clean. Earplugs are useful because of nearby dogs and chickens, and the occasional sounds from the toilet and hot water heater after use.
