El Cosmico

The telescope and the javelinas made our evenings memorable. We spotted a herd in the park, and looking at the stars through the telescope was a great way to end the night. El Cosmico also has a really distinctive, relaxed feel, with eclectic decor. The stay did feel pricey, especially once we figured out the breakfast charge. We thought the extra cost covered breakfast for each person in the room, but it was just one burrito, which was disappointing.

The managers even helped us after hours when we accidentally locked ourselves out, and the staff were lovely throughout, friendly and full of good suggestions for things to do around Marfa. We went to the Bob Dylan birthday showcase and some gallery openings they told us about. A few friends and I were glad to stay at El Cosmico one last time before it transitions to the new property. Memorial Day weekend has always been a fun time for us to visit, and this trip was just as enjoyable. It's a special place with special people. Can't wait to return.

We stayed in a safari tent for three nights over Thanksgiving and were able to keep warm, even when the nights got very cold. The front desk supplies firewood for the shared bonfire, and the outdoor showers had hot water and great pressure. There was good coffee in the lobby each morning, the staff were friendly, and dogs are welcome. El Cosmico is a really unusual spot in a cool, remote location. We loved it and will definitely come back.

The reception woman was kind and helpful, the showers were hot, and people were laid-back and kept to themselves. My stay itself went smoothly, but the tent was a problem. Its zipper was broken, and a clip at the front was too, so I couldn't open the flaps all the way for airflow. I'd seen another review mention the same damage. I didn't ask to move because I'd already driven eight hours and just wanted to rest. Noise kept waking me up. First a train, then a barking dog, then the wind shaking the tent and its broken entrance flaps. I'm a light sleeper. If I stayed again, I'd choose an RV or bring earplugs or something else to block the sound.
