Seeing the animals come right up to the vehicles was amazing. The place has 400 acres, 900 animals, and 99 species, and it gave me the feeling of being in Africa even though I’ve never been there. The old off-road vehicles are impressive too, especially knowing they’ve had them for 70 years. They even have their own mechanics, gas station, sanitation, and “poop patrol.” They’ve been in business for 35 years. It was freezing on Valentine’s Day, but they offered blankets and we shared. Great visit, and even my 4- and 9-year-olds loved it.

Getting to feed the animals on the behind-the-scenes tour was amazing, and riding on top of the truck felt daunting at first but was really cool. The animals are clearly well cared for, with their environments suited to their health and well-being. Some zoomed-in photos might make things look more confined than they really are. I’m so grateful to Schea in reservations and our guide Michelle for making the trip such a special day and a memory we’ll treasure.

We spent two nights and booked both dinner and lunch, and both meals were excellent. Bianca made the general three-hour tour so much fun, and the behind-the-scenes tour was well worth the splurge. Feeding giraffes, warthogs, and all the babies was a highlight. We learned a lot and felt completely immersed, even wandering around close to midnight to watch the nighttime activity. There were owls, bats, and hares in the surrounding area, plus beautiful, varied gardens that were kept immaculate. Everything felt magical, from the animals and tent to the service and food. Thanks to Veronica, and to the front office for the rides back up the hill. Sitting on the truck’s top deck is a must. Wonderful stay!

Jeff made the tour especially memorable. He knows the animals inside and out, including the finer details, and answered everyone’s questions patiently, whatever their age. His attention and enthusiasm made it clear he loves his work. We saw a two-day-old baby cape buffalo, Ozzy the white rhino calf, giraffes, wildebeest, and antelope. Jeff also explained that all gazelles are antelope, though not all antelope are gazelles. The weather was warm and comfortable, and our curious group added to the fun. Starting with a walking portion before getting on the open-air vehicle was a nice way into the tour. The gift shop had helpful staff and a good selection, and grabbing food during the break was a welcome touch. The whole operation felt well run. We visited Safari West in March, but didn’t stay overnight or dine there. It was a great memory for my daughter and me.

The two female ostriches were my favorite. They really put on a show. Seeing my son get excited about giraffes, zebras, and rhinos up close was priceless, and the scenery, animals, and care for conservation and education made the visit feel adventurous and thoughtfully planned. It was one of the most special experiences I’ve shared with him, and we left with full hearts, great photos, and memories we’ll talk about for years. Our guide Killan brought the safari to life. She was warm, enthusiastic, and knew how to connect with both adults and kids. Her explanations were engaging and easy to follow, and she answered every question patiently and passionately. My son was captivated by her stories, and you could tell she truly loves what she does. Her kindness, energy, and professionalism made a great experience even better. Safari West is a wonderful place for families, and we’d love to return. We’ll definitely plan a future trip to go glamping. Thank you, Safari West, and especially Killan!
