Landmark Inn

The Landmark Inn made a great base for walking around downtown, and parking was no trouble. We also liked having the pub and cocktail bar right in the hotel, especially during such a bitterly cold week. The pub’s food was simple but really good, and the bar was handy for a nightcap without having to drive. My husband says there’s no reason to look elsewhere next time we’re in the UP, and I agree. The staff were the highlight. Everyone we met was kind, helpful, and professional. Elaine at the front desk was especially helpful and attentive, and was there for most of our trip if we had questions or needed anything. Our room was spacious, clean, and laid out so a few people could have their own space. It also had a lovely view, especially at sunrise. Some details could use a little TLC, though, like the tilework and shower pan, and maybe a fresh coat of paint.

We ended up spending my wife’s birthday in the Superior Suite at the Landmark Inn instead of going out. Once we settled in, we didn’t feel like leaving. The views were amazing, and the clawfoot tub was great. We could wander between the restaurant and cocktail bar, and both were excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful the whole time.

The sixth-floor view was wonderful, and our smallish room was nice. The TV wouldn’t let us use our own streaming services, and there’s no secure internet. Both feel pretty outdated.

The room smelled damp and had several problems: dust bunnies ran along the ceiling corners, the shower grout had mold, the trim was very dirty, and the bathroom light was missing its cover. Something sticky on the floor made a whole towel dirty when we tried to wipe it up. We were disappointed enough to leave a night early, and wouldn’t stay here again. We booked the Landmark Inn for an ice fishing trip after a guide recommended it. The woman who checked us in was lovely, but the front desk generally didn’t acknowledge us when we came or went. We were told smoking anywhere on the premises would mean a fine, yet we walked past several people smoking, including employees or people we’d seen behind the desk. Locals had a lot of good things to say about the Landmark, but our visit didn’t live up to its reputation. I hope this helps someone decide where to book. I like supporting local places, but this wasn’t worth what we paid.
