Hotel Breakwater South Beach

The location is great, and the staff were really friendly, but both rooms we stayed in had broken basics. In the first, the shower only got lukewarm at best, the coffee maker was broken, and the phone had a cut line. The ocean view was mostly blocked, although the corner window was beautiful. In the second room, the TV didn't work, the bathroom door kept sliding open, and the water was lukewarm again. Both rooms were clean. The key cards were another hassle. They needed reactivation if they came near another electronic device, and for some reason they stopped working an hour or two before the 11 a.m. checkout. The rooms were clean, but at this price the basic amenities should work.

The location on Ocean Drive in South Beach is great if you're after a historic property, but the service was poor. We checked in for four nights and found there was no bathroom door, leaving the toilet fully visible from the room. When we asked to move, we were told to come back the next day, and then got a room in an adjacent property. Coffee pods and water were supposed to be included, but I had to call the front desk twice for fresh towels, two pods, and bottled water. That was the only time coffee or water was replenished during the whole stay. We also had to carry heavy beach chairs to the beach, which wasn't ideal.

The Breakwater Hotel has a classic South Beach look, with its Art Deco design and blue neon lighting. After dark, the lights make it feel like a scene from an old Miami nightlife film, and it's especially photogenic along Ocean Drive. It's right across from the beach, with Lummus Park just steps away. Palm trees, the ocean breeze, and the colorful buildings give the area that familiar Miami Beach feel. Restaurants and music are all around, too, while the sand is directly across the street. For the full South Beach experience, this is a historic place to stay or visit. The central location and nice restaurant were the only positives. The room was very small and filthy, including the floor and carpet. The windows were dirty and difficult to open, there was nowhere to put a suitcase, and there were no hooks for clothes or towels. There were no tissues or other amenities. The shower had soap, but weak pressure and a leak that left the room damp all the time. Staff were helpless when we asked for extra pillows, and they had none. The room and nearby restaurants were absurdly expensive.
