I rated it four stars, though it felt more like three and a half. Check-in went smoothly, the room was good and clean, and the staff were polite. The problem was the old AC: it was loud and only blew warm air, so sleeping was tough. Turning it off and opening the windows, which only moved a little, didn't cool the room down. I'd recommend the hotel if they updated the AC, but after that terrible night's sleep, I can't recommend it wholeheartedly.

The valet was the best part of the hotel, helping us with all our bags. We managed despite the problems, but anyone who needs a connecting room should look elsewhere. My daughter booked a suite with one for her wedding weekend so she and her 10 bridesmaids, plus me, could do hair and makeup together. The hotel doesn't guarantee a connecting room at check-in even when it's booked that way, which is a poor policy. Some furniture was also in bad shape. A large table collapsed when moved only a few inches, and the maintenance worker didn't arrive until later in the morning. He just told us, “you shouldn’t move the furniture”. The reinforced brackets on the legs made it obvious the table was already broken. Luckily no children were there, or they could have been hurt. I don't want others booking with the same expectations to go through that.

The staff are always kind and helpful, and the rooms have a lovely design and are clean. It's a historic building, so room sizes can vary a lot, even within the same category. Some are smaller and cozy, others much larger. If you can, stay in the Spa King.

We had a decent stay, though the hotel felt a bit creepy. What I'm most upset about is the $135 illegal parking fine we got on the first night while the car was being valeted. We've called repeatedly without getting it resolved. It was a rental, so Hertz paid the fine on my company card, which has caused a myriad of issues. It's unacceptable that the hotel hasn't treated this as an important mistake to fix.
