Americas Best Value Inn Tunica Resort

We booked online and asked for rooms with double beds, but when we arrived they had nothing clean ready. We waited while they said they'd clean some rooms, then came back to find they only had rooms with one bed. The whole building smelled like pot, and the place wasn't very clean. There was dirt in the bed, and the toilet and floor looked old and dirty. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

The halls were full of leaves, and both sets of front doors had to be opened and shut by hand. Inside, the place smelled like pot, the sheets were stained, and there were marks on the floor too. None of the walls had been painted, just old drywall repairs left bare.

We were five hours from home, arriving at 8pm with a confirmation number for our reservation, and were told there was no vacancy. Nobody had notified us that there wouldn't be a room. The only answer we got was, "NO VACANCY." We were left with nowhere to stay that far from home.

The price was hard to beat: our king room was $28, just over $40 with taxes and fees, and we booked online less than half an hour before arriving. Check-in and checkout were the easiest I've ever had, and they let us leave a little late. The staff were really friendly and helpful, with a good sense of humor. The front desk even had a Pokémon calendar. We felt safe, nobody bothered us, and the room was quiet enough that we never heard other guests or their TVs. The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable and clean, and the microwave, fridge, and TV all worked. The remote needed batteries, but we didn't mind sorting that out. It had a king bed, and pets are allowed with a deposit. The room somehow didn't have that stale cigarette smell. The key cards worked on the first try, which is unusual for me. There's a door from the room to the parking lot, handy for getting to the car, though you have to enter the hotel through the front door because the key won't open the back entrance. The vending machines are across from the checkout desk, not at the end of the first-floor hall as the signs suggest. There were also rooms marked “Plantation” and “Levee.” The late-night clerk said Plantation was a banquet/storage room, though I wasn't entirely sure I believed him. I'm kidding, it was quaint. It could've been cleaner. There were some hairs on the floor and a cigarette butt in the toilet, and the surfaces could've used a better wipe. It wasn't bad enough for us to ask for another room, especially at that price and with such a last-minute booking. I couldn't find the advertised breakfast when I looked around 9:00. It was listed until 9:30, so maybe it had run out, but either way we didn't mind. The smoke detector was in the desk drawer instead of on the wall. It had batteries and worked if we wanted to put it up, but we were glad it wasn't in the way when the back door was open while we talked outside. The back door could be a safety concern, and both doors could use better locks, but we felt safe and didn't see anyone suspicious. I'd read earlier reviews mentioning bed bugs, but we saw none. There were no visible signs of an infestation on the white sheets, and we didn't see any other bugs in the room or hotel. If bed bugs were ever a real problem here, it seems to have been addressed. The location is older and could use updates and renovation, and the room could've been cleaner. Still, the staff, simple check-in, and low price worked for us, and we'd stay again at $28 a night.
