Rose Heart Inn

Scot, Cindy, and the Rose Heart Inn helped me feel safe and at ease during an awful time. I had to stay in the Mount Gilead region for almost a week because of unfortunate circumstances, and I'd been stranded in just the clothes I was wearing. Cindy found me a change of clothes while they helped with my laundry. They went well beyond what I needed to make me feel at home. They're some of the kindest, most generous people I've met. The house has Victorian charm in the wallpaper, bathroom details, parlor, library, and all the little touches. The rooms are adorable, with a quaint feel, though they may not be technologically modern. Breakfast made me feel like royalty each morning: the table was beautifully set, there was a lovely selection of food, and the coffee was great. Lots of it was locally sourced, and Scot lovingly made everything. I'll always remember those days and the hospitality Scot and his family showed me, which represents the generosity I experienced in this part of Ohio. If I'm ever nearby again, I'd 100% return to this charming B&B.

We left after seeing the room. It had no wifi, and the bed was uncomfortable even just to sit on. The whole visit had felt unwelcoming from the beginning. Our kids gave us a Rose Heart Inn gift certificate for Christmas. We've stayed at at least a dozen Bed and Breakfast Inns in recent years and have never felt this unwelcome. When we arrived, we heard someone we assumed was Mrs. Long say to the older woman who greeted us, “I'm not going out there to talk to those people.” Then we waited in the lobby for about 15 minutes. Mr. Long eventually came downstairs and checked us in. He asked if we wanted breakfast, and we said yes. We choose B&Bs for the wonderful breakfasts we've come to expect. After checking with Mrs. Long, who still hadn't come out to acknowledge us, he said there would be no “gourmet breakfast” as advertised on the website. He was handling breakfast, so we could have a donut or muffin instead. He added that the other six days of the week there is an actual hot breakfast. I don't know what Mrs. Long's issue with us was. The only contact we'd had was making the reservation, and the behavior we saw was completely inappropriate. It was a horrible experience all around.

Breakfast was a highlight: the innkeepers tailored it to what we liked and served a delicious meal that set us up for the day. We were traveling with my daughter and our miniature schnauzer, and the spacious rooms gave all of us plenty of room to relax. This family-run inn has just a few rooms, but the welcome was warm from the moment we arrived. We felt like long-lost relatives. The atmosphere took us back almost a century, and the details that bring that era to life add so much charm. Our visit was short because we were passing through, but we've already decided to come back. Rose Heart Inn was a delight, and the wonderful staff made our stay memorable.

The house is beautiful and the furnishings are amazing, but that was where the good qualities ended. The room was filthy, with dust and cobwebs, a dusty ceiling fan, and disgusting jets in the tub. The linens and towels were old and musty, and the flat pillow had no liner and a filthy, threadbare case. It was too dirty to use the jacuzzi or even take a hot bath. I was exhausted enough to want to cry. I paid $112 for a dirty room, didn't get to soak in a jacuzzi, and wasn't going to get the hot breakfast I'd planned on either. I was disappointed from the start. After traveling many miles for many days, I was looking forward to what had been advertised. I called to book a room and said my ETA was around 7:30 pm. When I realized I'd be later, I called again to let them know. At check-in, I asked about the price. He'd quoted me $105 on the phone, but the website listed the charlotte at $95. He said that was an error he'd need to fix, but didn't give me the listed price, which I feel should have been honored. He showed me the kitchen and dining room, asked whether 9 am breakfast would work, and then we heard a vacuum. My room wasn't ready, so I waited in the sitting room. Someone else eventually took me upstairs and told me the jacuzzi didn't work. I could shower or bathe, but wasn't to use the jets. Then I was told a full hot breakfast wouldn't be available until 10 am, or I could have a continental breakfast at 7 am. I was too tired to argue, so I accepted the continental option, but my travel itinerary didn't allow me to wait until 10. The jacuzzi and hot breakfast were the reasons I booked this place to treat myself. Nobody offered to move me to a room with a working jacuzzi, though I was the only guest. Maybe none of them work. They should have explained the breakfast options and jacuzzi problem when I called. It felt dishonest and like taking advantage of a weary traveler. I left early and bought myself a hot breakfast. What a shame.
