You can tell it's seen better days, but being right by the water makes it a lovely place. The sunsets are great, and it has a real 90s feel.

Reading by the lake outside was lovely, and the view really is breathtaking. The room, though, was in unacceptable shape for $280 a night. There were dead bugs everywhere, including in the bed, and cobwebs on the ceiling. The bathroom had clumps of body hair from previous guests in the corners. I know the Upper Peninsula can be rustic, but a basic level of cleanliness should come with that price. I brought my mother on a trip to the UP and chose this motel as a splurge for its view. During the hottest day of the year, the only cooling was a moldy 17-year-old window unit, which I actually looked up. The room's layout has a big wall in the middle, and the small windows didn't let in enough air for a cross breeze. I spent the first two nights soaked in sweat. They really should replace those AC units once in a while.

The beds and pillows were good, so after a full day of hiking I could get some proper rest. The water and the view are amazing. I just got back from spending several days and nights at The Sunset. It's old, worn, and definitely not luxurious, but I thought it was awesome.

The front desk lady was very nice, and the view is lovely. Still, what we paid didn't feel justified by a rundown, unpleasant room. It smelled horrible, the bathroom wasn't very clean, and the sheets looked used. Their free “breakfast” was just old packaged pastries that looked like they'd been sitting around for a while. I hate leaving a bad review for a small business, but they need to make real improvements to support the prices they're charging.

We needed somewhere to stay when bad weather interrupted our camping trip, and this worked out just right. Everything was clean, and the kitchenette was lovely. It felt like a little cozy cabin at granny's.
