We gave up on the rooms and drove about 15 minutes to Carbondale, where we found a much nicer national chain hotel. Before that, the owner came to the night window still fastening his pajamas after my co-worker and I woke him at 9:00 last night. He showed us several tiny, disgusting rooms that smelled awful, asking each time if one would work. None did. I wouldn't trust the website or the positive reviews here. I'm convinced the owners wrote them.
My wife and I turned around and left. The room smelled like mold and Lysol, and this felt like a cheap, lousy motel in an outdated motor court. I felt sorry for the manager, but the place would be better suited as a halfway house for paroled felons. Whoever gave it five stars must live in a cave.
Rest peacefully, Apple Tree Inn. You were there for so many of us for so many years.
