The breakfast was just alright, and there was coffee but nothing else to drink. The waffles had no syrup. For what this penthouse suite costs, I’d choose two connecting rooms and hope they’re used and cleaned more often. We stayed in the two bedroom penthouse, room 1428. The lobby and restaurant area were nice, and check-in was quick and easy, though the elevators to the 14th floor took a long time. The ocean view from the room was beautiful, but inside it felt very dated, musty and poorly ventilated, almost like the rugs were wet and hadn’t been cleaned properly. The AC stopped twice during our three days, and maintenance came to fix it. There was a lot of visible dust in the closet where the AC is, on the walls, and falling from a boxed-in area on one bedroom ceiling. I cleaned what I could, especially with a toddler there. One phone didn’t work. There were pieces of glass on the balcony floor, a broken handle on the main bedroom slider, and the second bedroom deck’s table, chairs and loungers were all bunched together. The clocks were an hour behind, so I wondered if the room hadn’t been used or touched in a while. The fire alarm went off on our floor at 4am the first night, but nothing seemed to be happening when we went out, and the front desk didn’t answer our call. The bathroom vent also made a dripping sound all night. This suite definitely needs updating, if you can call it that.

The onsite restaurant was tasty, with lovely service and great views. We went for taco Tuesday, with $6 margaritas, and the carne Asada was delicious, with big tender chunks of beef. Staff throughout the hotel were very nice, helpful and accommodating. Our room was big, clean and spacious, and someone came up right away to get the heat/AC working when it wasn’t working on arrival. It’s a great spot steps from the beach, and it seemed like every room had an ocean view. The pool was closed during our stay, though it looked nice, with a lazy river, hot tub and food truck kind of setup. Breakfast was typical Hampton Inn style, scrambled eggs one day and biscuits and gravy the next. I just wish there’d been a non-pork protein option. The fitness Center had dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, a pulley machine with pull up bars, and even a box, but we didn’t feel safe using it because the ceiling was low. It was a great stay.

The ocean view was beautiful, but it couldn’t make up for how poorly kept the room felt. There were stains and patches on the walls and ceiling, frayed carpet all through the room, and so many carpet stains that it seemed worn and dirty. A TV was sitting in front of another TV. We found condoms on the floor beside the bed as soon as we arrived, which made us question how thoroughly the room had been cleaned. The shower soap shelf had fallen off the wall, the toilet paper holder was broken, and the refrigerator had no temperature knob, so maintenance had to use pliers to adjust it. For the price, I expected a clean, maintained room. Basic housekeeping and maintenance seemed to have been overlooked. I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it based on my experience.

Our check-in left us feeling singled out and unwelcome, and we hope management looks into what happened and reaches out. Guests deserve respect and professionalism from the start of a stay. My husband and I arrived excited for vacation and warmly greeted the front desk associate, Michelle. She didn’t greet us back or make eye contact, and her tone felt cold, even though no other guests were waiting. My husband proudly serves in the U.S. military, so he politely asked about parking fees and possible military discounts. We understand a discount might not be allowed, but she abruptly replied, “no matter who you are, you have to pay.” She repeatedly said in a defensive way, “we don’t profit, you booked through a vacation company.” We booked through Hilton Vacations, so we found that reaction confusing and felt blamed for our booking choice. It came across as if she were personally offended, as though she owned the property and the money was coming out of her pocket. She also insisted on a paper booking confirmation, although Hilton Vacations had told us an email copy was enough. We calmly offered whatever information she needed. In the end, she took my husband’s name and phone number and completed check-in without the paper copy, so it was hard to see why she’d made that a problem at first. As an Asian couple with accents, we couldn’t ignore the difference in how we felt treated. We don’t make this lightly, but the discourtesy and dismissive behavior made us wonder if bias played a part. We stayed polite and respectful throughout.

The view is amazing, and the rate is good, but the hotel is in a run down part of town. If you plan to stay at the hotel the whole time, you may be okay, but I wouldn’t recommend walking around. People may approach you asking for money. The rooms are run down and not thoroughly cleaned, there was pee on the toilet seat and the carpet was torn up and dirty. Parking costs 25 a day, so if you’re flying in, you’re better off taking Uber or Lyft where you need to go.
